University of Heidelberg

Longwood, in affiliation with Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, is pleased to announce its Junior Year Abroad Program in the historic city of Heidelberg, Germany.  Student participants spend a full year or the spring semester at the University of Heidelberg, and receive up to 16 credits per semester (German 311, 312) toward graduation. In addition, these credits may be applied as elective units for both a foreign language major and a German minor.

Resting on the banks of the Neckar River, in the Rhine-Mosel region of Germany, Heidelberg is situated in the geographical heart of Europe.  In addition to excursions to cities such as Weimar, Dresden, Leipzig, and Wittenberg, which are scheduled as part of the program, students can take advantage of Heidelberg's central location to explore many major European cities which are just a few hours away by train. The birth place of German romanticism, Germany's oldest university, founded in 1386, is surrounded by beautiful churches, ancient theaters, and historic architecture. Emerging from the forested hills of the Odenwald, Heidelberg offers a breathtaking environment and a rich cultural heritage.

Who is eligible?

Students who have successfully completed four semesters of college-level German with a B average or better are eligible for the program. A cumulative grade-point average of B or better is an additional prerequisite for full acceptance. Students must have attained junior-year status prior to entering the University. The Heidelberg program offers courses through the Institute for German as a Foreign Language in German language, literature, linguistics, and culture and civilization. Students with advanced proficiency in German language may choose courses from the regular University catalog as well.

Housing

The Junior Year Abroad Program accepts the responsibility for securing housing for all program participants. Whenever possible, students are housed together with German students in dormitories. Most housing is centrally located to facilitate short walks or bus rides to activities and classes. Students are encouraged to spend two to three weeks during semester breaks living with a German family via the 'Experiment in International Living."

Travel

Round-trip trans-Atlantic travel is arranged for students in a group by the Junior Year Abroad Program. En route to Heidelberg from the European landing point, the program provides transportation, sight-seeing and room and board. Students explore the Rhine-Moselle area before proceeding to Heidelberg. In addition, the program sponsors excursions to Bavaria, various German cities, and group outings to cultural performances throughout the year.
