Summer Institute for Spanish Teachers
Valencia, España
2 - 18 de julio de 2006

Longwood University, in affiliation with the Institute of Spanish Studies, is pleased to offer its Summer Institute for Spanish Teachers 2006 in Valencia, Spain.
Participants will spend two weeks living with Spanish
families and attending classes, as well as visiting sites of cultural and
historical significance. Participants may earn three (3) or six (6)
graduate credits.
Peñíscola
Courses offered are graduate-level courses. Participants must hold a B.A. degree in Spanish and should be teaching or planning to teach Spanish. Applicants who hold a B.A. degree in a discipline other than Spanish must have completed at least two upper-level undergraduate courses in Spanish to be eligible. Nevertheless, participants at all levels of oral proficiency in Spanish will be eligible. The goal of the Institute is to offer the opportunity to improve one's ability in all of the language skill areas. Three (3) or six (6) graduate credits will be awarded upon successful completion of the program.
You may choose one or two courses (three or six graduate credits). Please be advised, however, that due to the very short length of the program, those choosing to take two classes will be very busy, and may not have as great a chance to take advantage of the cultural opportunities offered by socializing with family members, etc. This is a very intensive program, and those who would like to have a little free time should take only one of the classes.
Requirements for all classes include attendance and participation in the classes, participation in the cultural activities and visits, some readings and short essays, an exam, and a research style paper to be completed after the end of the program and mailed to Longwood University. In some cases, you may receive materials to read before the start of the program. Click on course title for syllabus.

Housing:
We sometimes receive inquiries from those who wish to arrange their own lodging. Below are our policies for those who will not need the room and board for the Summer Institute for Spanish Teachers:
1. Participants who will not stay with host families arranged by the program must make arrangements to stay with native Spanish speakers. If the participant is a native Spanish speaker, then this requirement is not necessary. In all cases, the lodging arrangements must be such that there is opportunity to interact with Spaniards on a daily basis.
2. Participants who meet the conditions for the above stipulation
will pay the standard program price according to their residency (Virginia
resident or resident of other states), and the amount of the room and board
will be refunded to them by the Institute of Spanish Studies.
Costs:
The program costs include:
Tuition for 3 or 6 graduate credits
Registration fee
Room & board with a Spanish family
Field trips, cultural activities and excursions

Please
make your travel arrangements early. Participants must arrive in Valencia by Sunday, July
2, 2006, which means you must leave the US on Saturday, July 1,
2006 or earlier. All flights are over-night from
the U.S. to Spain, France, Germany, etc.
We will be glad to offer help or suggestions for options. It is strongly suggested that participants make travel plans early; prices in the summer are high and the lower rates will not be available very long. The earlier you reserve, the better.

Longwood has recently garnered accolades in three national publications. For the eighth consecutive year, Longwood is included in the America's Best Colleges 2006 rankings by U.S.News & World Report, maintaining its #11 Tier One position ranking among public Southern universities that grant master's degrees. The university moved up from 37th to 36th for public and private Southern universities offering master's degrees. In addition, Longwood was included in two favorable categories: Highest Graduation Rates (61 percent) and Least Debt. The percentage of graduates with debt has dropped from 84 to 77 percent, and the average debt also has decreased.
Longwood was also selected a Best Southeastern College for 2006 by The Princeton Review. In this annual ranking, based on student surveys and published in a book, Longwood was cited for "offering undergraduates a well-rounded education, citizen leadership, and personal growth, all at a fairly cheap price, even for out-of-state students." Longwood also was cited for "an excellent college of business with a great reputation and excellent internship programs and job opportunities upon graduation."
Most recently, Longwood was one of only 20 colleges and universities nationwide selected by USA Today as colleges that "foster student success," according to the headline over the article, which appeared in that newspaper on Aug. 29. These institutions were chosen from among 700 four-year schools that participated in the National Survey of Student Engagement from 2000 to 2003. "What sets the schools apart, the researchers say, is that when factors such as the academic quality of the students they admit are taken into account, the institutions have above-average graduation rates and do an outstanding job of involving students in their education," the article says. "The institutions share what (the survey director) calls 'an unshakeable focus on student learning' and create environments designed to promote student success."
Founded in 1839 in Farmville, Virginia, Longwood University is a coeducational, comprehensive state university offering programs leading to bachelor's and master's degrees in a wide variety of subjects, including the Curriculum and Instruction Specialist in Modern Languages programs with concentration in Spanish, as well as the Initial Licensure programs in Modern Languages and English as a Second Language, all leading to the Master of Science in Education.
