Peñíscola

Longwood University:

Founded in 1839 in Farmville, Virginia, Longwood University was recently named "Best Buy" in America's 100 Best College Buys (1997, 1998 and 1999), a national publication which profiles the highest academically rated schools with the lowest annual costs.   For the second year, Longwood University is listed in the U.S. News & World Report ranking of "America's Best Colleges." In the year 2000 edition Longwood moved up from number nine to number seven among top regional public schools in the South.   U.S. News bases its rankings on academic reputation, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving.

Longwood University is a coeducational, comprehensive state college offering programs leading to bachelor's and master's degrees in a wide variety of subjects, including the Curriculum and Instruction Specialist in Modern Languages Programs with concentration in Spanish, leading to the Master of Science in Education. Longwood University's Office of International Affairs currently sponsors 27 programs in 18 countries.

Accreditation:

Longwood University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Virginia State Board of Education.

Una familia española en Valencia

Housing:

Participants will live with Spanish families in Valencia, where they will have three meals per day and enjoy interaction with native speakers, as well as the opportunity to meet other Spanish people.

We sometimes receive inquiries from those who wish to arrange their own lodging.  Below are our policies for those who will not need the room and board for the Summer Institute for Spanish Teachers:

1.  Participants who will not stay with host families arranged by the program must make arrangements to stay with native Spanish speakers.  If the participant is a native Spanish speaker, then this requirement is not necessary.  In all cases, the lodging arrangements must be such that there is opportunity to interact with Spaniards on a daily basis.

2.  Participants who meet the conditions for the above stipulation will pay the standard program price according to their residency (Virginia resident or resident of other states), and the amount of the room and board will be refunded to them by the Institute of Spanish Studies.

Requirements for Admission:

Courses offered are graduate-level courses. Participants must hold a B.A. degree in Spanish and should be teaching or planning to teach Spanish.  Applicants who hold a B.A. degree in a discipline other than Spanish must have completed at least two upper-level undergraduate courses in Spanish to be eligible. Nevertheless, participants at all levels of oral proficiency in Spanish will be eligible. The goal of the Institute is to offer the opportunity to improve one's ability in all of the language skill areas.  Three (3) or six (6) graduate credits will be awarded upon successful completion of the program.

Participantes en clase (Instituto 2000)

Class Schedule and Course Descriptions:

You may choose one or two courses (three or six graduate credits).  Please be advised, however, that due to the very short length of the program, those choosing to take two classes will be very busy, and may not have as great a chance to take advantage of the cultural opportunities offered by socializing with family members, etc.  This is a very intensive program, and those who would like to have a little free time should take only one of the classes.

Requirements for all classes include attendance and participation in the classes, participation in the cultural activities and visits, some readings and short essays, an exam, and a research style paper to be completed after the end of the program and mailed to Longwood University.  In some cases, you may receive materials to read before the start of the program.  Detailed course syllabi will be available in March.
