Summer Institute for Spanish Teachers
2-18 de julio de 2006

This is the letter we would send you if you didn't have internet access.

Dear Colleague:

Thank you for your interest in our Summer Institute for Spanish Teachers 2006 in Valencia, Spain.  The Institute takes place from July 2 through July 18, during the exciting Feria de Julio in Valencia, and you will have the opportunity to participate in some of the events of the Feria, see a «Zarzuela», Flamenco concert or theatrical event, and visit historic and cultural sites.  Valencia is a beautiful city located on the east coast surrounded by beaches, and boasts important historical monuments as well as the most modern museums of history and science.. Your graduate classes will be taught by experienced professors from Longwood University and the Institute of Spanish Studies.  Enclosed is an informational brochure and an application.  Our application dates are January 10 -  May 1;  however we can accept a limited number of participants, so to ensure your participation we encourage you to send application and deposit long before the May 1 deadline.  We will begin accepting applications on January 10, and will continue until the program is filled.

Requirements for acceptance into the program include having completed a B.A. degree in Spanish; if your degree is in another discipline, you should have completed significant advanced level course work in Spanish.  Applicants should currently be teaching Spanish or planning to teach Spanish.  Participants may choose to earn three or six graduate credits in the program.  The cost of the program is $2,100.00 for residents of Virginia (3 or 6 graduate credits) and for residents of other states taking 3 graduate credits.    For residents of other states who take 6 graduate credits, the cost is  $3,149.02.  These costs include tuition, a homestay with a Spanish family and three meals per day, cultural excursions and activities, medical insurance, and an official Longwood University transcript.  You must make your own travel arrangements to and from Valencia (suggestions are found on our website).  You must leave the U.S. by July 1 in order to arrive in Spain on July 2.  We strongly suggest that you make your travel plans early; prices in the summer can be double what you may arrange if you plan early.

Once you have been accepted into the program, we will send you cultural information about Spain, more details about the program, courses, professors, excursions and visits, advice for travel arrangements, packing, currency, etc.   During the Institute, your mornings will be spent in class, and you will spend some of your afternoons in cultural visits and activities.  You will have three meals each day with your Spanish family. You are expected to speak Spanish at all times during the program; indeed there is little opportunity to speak English.

Participants may take one or two classes (three or six graduate credits); please be advised, however, that due to the very short length of the program, those choosing to take two classes will be very busy, and may not have as great a chance to take advantage of the cultural opportunities offered by socializing with the family, etc.  This is an intensive program, and those who would like to have a little free time should take only one of the classes.  Requirements for all classes include attendance and participation in the classes, participation in the cultural activities and visits, some readings and short essays, an exam, and a research style paper to be completed after the end of the program and mailed to Longwood University.  You may receive materials to read before the start of the program.  Detailed course syllabi will be available in April.

Let me know if you have any questions about the program.  Check our web page for details, updates and photos (http://www.longwood.edu/modernlanguages/Institute.htm) .  I look forward to your participation.

Sincerely,

Lily Anne Goetz
