Longwood EPML

Modern Language Scholarships

The Ruth Jennings Adams Patton Scholarship in French is a renewable award presented to a Longwood student whose record of scholarship and activities seems to promise a successful college and professional career in Modern Language teaching.

The Draper/Barksdale Award is presented to students in Modern Languages for study abroad.  Miss Helen Draper was a Professor Emeritus of French, a former Chairman of the Foreign Languages Department and a Longwood graduate, Class of 1921.  Miss Emily Barksdale was a distinguished Professor of Spanish from 1942 until 1963.

The Von Schilling Scholarship in German, named for Ilse von Schilling, Longwood's first Dean of Students, was endowed by her niece, Mrs. Martha von Schilling Stuart of Richmond, an alumna of Longwood's language program.

* Each language discipline has it's own book award: the French Book Prize, the Federal Republic of Germany Book Prize, the Spanish Book Prize.  The books range from a grammar book to a book of literature.
