Student Organizations

Student Organizations

Organizations within the Department of Music are national, professional organizations that directly serve students through the college years and help prepare them for careers in music.

  • Music Educators National Conference
MENC is a national, professional organization affiliated with the National Education Association. Our local student chapter is one of hundreds on college campuses throughout the country. It is also affiliated with the Virginia Music Education Association. MENC strives to increase and maintain an interest in and knowledge of music education by acquainting students with the privileges and responsibilities of the profession, to assist the school and music organizations in various projects, and to provide opportunity for contacts with leaders in the field. The college chapter offers programs, discussions, and concerts for experience and enjoyment. Music Education concentrations should consider membership in the organization a must all the years they are in college. The biannual national conference of MENC was held in Washington, D.C., in March, 2000.
  • Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia
Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia is a national, social fraternity for men whose purpose is to promote and foster the development of music in America, to raise the standards of musical performance, and to provide aid and inspiration among its members. A 2.0 overall grade point average is required. Music majors and non-majors who are actively involved in music are eligible for election to the fraternity. The Mu Delta Chapter at Longwood maintains a chapter room in Wygal Music Building and in Curry Hall.
  • Sigma Alpha Iota
Sigma Alpha Iota, an international professional music fraternity for women, organized a chapter at Longwood College in 1959. Its purpose is to further the development of music in America, raise the standard of productive musical work and encouragement among students, and to give inspiration and material aid to its members. SAI sponsors benefit concerts and American-Music Musicales. Grade point averages for admission are: 2.5 overall average and 2.9 in music. The Gamma Kappa Chapter at Longwood has its chapter room in Wygal Music Building.
