To kick off the summer with a little rock and a little roll, the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts is excited to open its newest exhibition, It’s Always Rock & Roll: The Work of Photojournalist Janet Macoska. This exhibition was organized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland and will be on display at the LCVA from May 25‒September 21, 2013. A free, public opening reception will be held Saturday, May 25, from 5‒7 p.m.
This body of artwork is composed of more than 40 photographs of rock and roll performers captured through the lens of photojournalist Janet Macoska. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum presented the exhibition of her photography in 2003, and the collection has since traveled to museums in Dallas, Toronto, Orlando, and Indiana.
Macoska, who fell in love with rock and roll at an early age, had her first published image printed in Teen Screenmagazine when she was just 13 years old. She refers to the 1970s as "the golden age for a rock and roll photographer" and has spent her career photographing artists around the globe. Her work features many rock legends, including Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner and Michael Jackson but also includes more current artists such as Rihanna and The Black Keys.
The Kids’ Activity Room will also open a new exhibition called Kids Rock! An Interactive Art & Music Space for Children. Kids are invited to jam out on the stage with musical instruments to create their own live rock and roll performance. The Kids’ Activity Room was made possible through generous gifts from Nancy Lockwood, Scott and Michelle Haymans and Grant’s Glass.
Continuing the theme of rock and roll, the LCVA will also be hosting a Summer Solstice Concert & Membership Drive featuring local musician Tray Eppes and friends at Charley’s Waterfront Café & Wine Bar on Friday, June 28, at 6 p.m. An artist talk will be held in the lower level of the LCVA on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 4 p.m. with a concert by Los Caroleenas following at 7:30 p.m.
