COURT DECISIONS AND LEGAL DOCUMENTS
The National Center for Public Policy Research This website contains the text of Brown v. Board of Education , decided by the Supreme Court on May 17, 1954.
The National Center for Public Policy Research This website contains the text of Brown II , decided by the Supreme Court on May 31, 1955.
"The Ground Beneath Our Feet: Massive Resistance" This website contains primary legal documents that pertain to Dorothy E. Davis, et al v. County School Board of Prince Edward County, Virginia.
LEARNING ACTIVITIES AND LESSON PLANS
Virginia Commonwealth University James Branch Cabell Library This website is an online exhibit entitled "Separate but Not Equal: Race, Education, and Prince Edward County, Virginia," based on the papers of Dr. Edward H. Peeples, Jr. It includes photographs, documents, an extensive bibliography and a links page to other websites.
National Archives This website includes teaching activities, documents, and photographs about Davis v. Prince Edward County Board of Education, which originated in Virginia. Students compare and analyze photographs of Moton High School, where African American students attended, and Farmville High School, where white students attended.
National Archives This website includes teaching activities and documents about the Brown decision, such as the judgment in Briggs v. Elliott , which originated in South Carolina, and a letter by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The website is produced by the National Archives.
Landmark Supreme Court Cases This website explains how a legal case moves through the court system, a history of Brown in the lower courts, key excerpts of the court opinions, and biographies of Chief Justice Earl Warren and NAACP attorney Thurgood Marshall. This website includes several good teaching activities, such as comparing regional media coverage of the decision and analyzing political cartoons. There is also an activity that focuses on the aftermath of the Brown decision and examines the desegregation of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957. This website is produced by Street Law and the Supreme Court Historical Society.
Civil Rights in U.S. and Virginia History This website provides primary documents, oral history transcripts and video interviews that comprised the documentary "Massive Resistance." The film was part of the "Ground Beneath Our Feet" series about Virginia History, which was produced by George Gilliam and the Central Virginia Educational Television Corporation (see below). Primary documents include the Gray Commission Report and speeches by Virginia politicians articulating their responses to the Brown decision. Students can read, watch, and hear interviews with Prince Edward County students and teachers and with Virginia state officials. Students can also view a series of photographs of public schools in Prince Edward County that were submitted as evidence in the Davis case, available through the National Archives, located here.

"The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow" This website is a companion to the television documentary series "The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow." It provides a dynamic way for students to explore the context out of which the Brown decision came. Students can hear former Moton High School students talk about the significance of the Brown decision here.
The History of Jim Crow, an Educator's site This website enables students to explore the era of segregation. It includes teaching activities for different periods within the Jim Crow era, including a teaching unit about the Brown decision.
NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. This website includes press releases about current day education cases, including the Michigan affirmative action cases, as well as a chronology of events in the history of civil rights in education since the Brown decision.
HISTORIC SITES
R.R. Moton Museum in Farmville, VA In 1951, African American students at Moton High School staged a walkout in protest of the unequal and inadequate conditions they faced. Their action led to the court case Davis v. Prince Edward County School Board of Prince Edward County, VA . The website also contains a link to a bibliography of sources.
"We Shall Overcome: Historic Places of the Civil Rights Movement, A National Register of Historic Places Travel Itinerary" This website discusses a number of historic sites related to the civil rights movement, including the R. R. Moton High School in Farmville, VA.
Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site The National Park Service runs this national historic site located in Topeka, Kansas.
