On April 24, 2001, Longwood University experienced the most tragic fire in her one-hundred and sixty-six year history. Gone in a matter of hours were Ruffner Hall, Grainger Hall and the beloved Rotunda.
Less than twenty-four hours later, Dr. Patricia Cormier addressed students, faculty, and staff assuring them the buildings would be rebuilt.
“The spirit of Longwood cannot be held down, and as the Phoenix rose from the ashes so shall we.” On April 23, 2005, just four years, minus one day after the fire, Longwood will be made whole again as we dedicate the “new” Ruffners and the “new” Rotunda. This will be one of the most moving events ever on the Longwood campus and it is anticipated the most well attended. We encourage you to return to campus for the rededication of Ruffner Hall. Come step on the slate step and re-enter Longwood’s signature building. Come view the magnificent murals on the ceiling of the Rotunda dome. Come gather around the railing on second and third floor. Come enjoy reliving memories of Longwood’s past and celebrating her future.
If you cannot return on Saturday, April 23, consider coming to one of the Ruffner Open Houses that have been scheduled from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27 and Sunday, May 1.
