28 August 2006 Governor Kaine announces appointments to Governor Tim Kaine recently appointed George Dawson and Robert E. Frye to the Longwood University Board of Visitors. Longwood alumna Dr. Helen Warriner-Burke was reappointed to the board. “Longwood University is thrilled with the appointment of two new distinguished Board members and the well-deserved reappointment of Dr. Warriner-Burke,” said Dr. Patricia Cormier, president of Longwood University. “Their addition to our Board of Visitors will strengthen even further our outstanding governing body. Longwood is very fortunate to boast one of the most committed boards in the Commonwealth.”
Dawson is president and chief executive officer of Centra Health, a regional health care system based in Lynchburg with more than 4,000 employees and 300 affiliated medical staff physicians. In January 2006, Farmville’s Southside Community Hospital finalized its affiliation with Centra Health which also operates Virginia Baptist Hospital and Lynchburg General Hospital. Dawson holds a master’s of hospital administration degree from the Medical College of Virginia and a bachelor’s degree from Wofford College. Dawson served in the United States Army Medical Corps for four years. He is a member of the Lynchburg College Board of Trustees and a resident of Bedford County.
Frye is former chair of the Fairfax County School Board and has served as an at-large school board member for nearly 20 years. In 2004 he received a Human Rights Award from the Fairfax County Human Rights Commission in recognition of his efforts to eliminate discrimination against students or staff based on race, gender, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, disability or other factors. In 1999 he retired from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission where he worked as a senior staff member for more than 25 years. Frye earned a bachelor’s degree from Howard University, a master’s degree from American University, and completed the senior executive education program of the Federal Executive Institute in Charlottesville, Va. He is a resident of Fairfax County. Dr. Warriner-Burke, a 1956 Longwood graduate, has been reappointed to the board. In 2002 she was appointed to a four-year term by former Governor Mark Warner. She served as secretary for two years. Dr. Warriner-Burke served for many years as supervisor of foreign languages for the Virginia Department of Education, for which she worked from 1961 until retiring in 1990. She was president of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages in 1976, received Longwood’s Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 1973, and is a former member of the Amelia County School Board. She earned a B.A. with honors in Spanish and English from Longwood, an M.A. from the National University of Mexico, and a Ph.D. from Ohio State University. She is a native and resident of Amelia County. |
