Longwood Board approves naming of college and funding for Master Plan development

Two actions taken by the Longwood University Board of Visitors during its meeting Dec. 1-2 will have long-lasting impact on Longwood.

First, the Board approved the naming of the College of Arts and Sciences after benefactors Dr. John Cook and Dr. Waverly Cole.  The Cook-Cole College of Arts and Sciences has been named “in recognition and appreciation for their beneficence to Longwood University, their devotion to higher education and the betterment of humankind,” according to the plaque that was unveiled Dec. 3 at the annual holiday dinner of the President’s Circle, honoring major Longwood donors.

Second, the board approved funding for the development of a Campus Master Plan, the first comprehensive plan for Longwood since 1991.

Dick Bratcher, vice president for administration and finance, said that a Request for Proposals would be developed to assist the university in selecting a vendor that can create a new master plan.  “This will be an in-depth look at what we are doing, where we are going, and how we develop a physical world to support that vision for the future,” Bratcher said.  Once a planning resource has been selected the process should take about 12 months to complete.

A summary of all action taken by the board follows:

• allocated $1,265,000 from the General Auxiliary Reserve Fund for phase IV of the lacrosse/field hockey complex and $500,000 from that fund for the Campus Master Plan. The first project will finalize the locker rooms, public restrooms, parking lot and grandstands at the complex, adjacent to Longwood House. The work will begin within 30 days. In the latter project, the funding will be used to hire a planning firm to facilitate the planning process (expected to take about a year) and to develop a new Campus Master Plan. The Board also approved moving into a Request for Proposal (RFP) process for a new Campus Master Plan.

• designated the College of Arts and Sciences the Cook-Cole College of Arts and Sciences in recognition of benefactors John R. Cook and Dr. Waverly M. Cole.

• approved the schematic design for phase II of the heating plant upgrade project. In this phase, a new heating plant will be built on the former field hockey field adjacent to the existing central plant.

• approved promotion and tenure criteria for the Departments of Biology and Environmental Sciences and Chemistry and Physics. The criteria were needed because of the reorganization of the Department of Natural Sciences into two departments.

• renewed the designation of Charles Lowe, director of public safety and police chief, as the university’s State Homeland Security Grant Program Agent. Designation of such an agent is required by the grant of nearly $40,000 that Longwood received from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in 2004.

The next regular meeting of the Board of Visitors is scheduled for March 23-24, 2007.
