Congressional candidates running for the Fifth District seat participated in a debate sponsored by Longwood’s Civic Leadership Institute and The Wilson Center for Leadership in the Public Interest at Hampden-Sydney College on Wednesday night, November 1.

The event was held in Crawley Forum at Hampden-Sydney College and featured incumbent GOP Congressman Virgil Goode, Democratic challenger Al Weed, and Independent-Green party candidate Joseph Oddo.

Panelists Len Stevens, news anchor for WSET (ABC-13), and Ginny Wray, editor of the Martinsville Bulletin each presented three questions to the candidates. Topics ranged from the war in Iraq, transportation, economic restructuring, campaign finance reform, and preserving family farms.

Dr. Scott Cole, assistant professor of political science at Longwood, served as moderator, and introductory remarks were made by Hampden-Sydney President Walter M. Bortz III.  Following the debate, Longwood President Dr. Patricia Cormier thanked the candidates for participating in the event and for their courage to run for public office. “Let me tell you that tonight, you heard the issues,” she said.

Longwood’s Civic Leadership Institute is an outgrowth of the university's participation in the American Democracy Project. The Institute is co-coordinated by Dr. Cole and Dr. Kerstin Soderlund, director of leadership and new student programs.
