“America and the World: Sustaining Democracy in the Global Age” subject of Longwood and Hampden-Sydney conference

Longwood University, with support from Hampden-Sydney College, will host “America and the World:  Sustaining Democracy in the Global Age,” an academic conference that seeks to understand the current state and future of democracy.  The event will be held January 25-27, 2007, at Longwood University and Hampden-Sydney College in Farmville. This conference has been approved by the Jamestown 400th Commemoration Commission to be part of the Future of Democracy conference series.

Richard Holbrooke, former United States Ambassador to the United Nations and a member of former President Clinton’s cabinet from 1999 to 2001, will present the keynote address. In addition, a series of panel discussions will address numerous issues concerning democratization, including the sustainability of democracy in the developing world, challenges facing post-industrial democracies, the impact of terrorism on freedom, and how globalization affects democracy.

Original research papers focusing on the theme of sustaining democracy in the global age may be submitted for consideration. The deadline for online submissions is June 15.
