7 November 2006 International Awareness Week events set for Nov. 13-17 Longwood University is celebrating International Awareness Week, Nov. 13-17, with several programs. The documentary film Nalini by Day, Nancy by Night, about outsourcing American jobs to India, will be shown Monday, Nov. 13, at 12:30 p.m. in the Lewis Room in Dorrill Dining Hall. The 27-minute film, which examines India’s call centers from the perspective of an Indian living in the United States, incorporates animation, live action and archival footage to explore the complexities of globalization, capitalism and identity. Afterward, there will be a discussion moderated by Dr. Glenn Dardick, assistant professor of computer information management systems at Longwood, and Sonali Gulati, assistant professor of filmmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University, who produced the award-winning film. Former Indian ambassador T.P. Sreenivasan will speak Tuesday, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m. in Wygal Auditorium on India and the United States – Two Democracies on the World Stage. Sreenivasan, who retired in June 2004 after 37 years in the Indian Foreign Service, was Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C. (1997-2000), ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations (1992-95), and Indian ambassador to Austria, Kenya and Fiji. He represented India at several UN bodies during assignments to Vienna and Nairobi and held various positions at India’s diplomatic missions in Bhutan, Japan, Myanmar and the former Soviet Union. The National Geographic documentary film China’s Lost Girls, about that country’s “one-child policy,” will be shown Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. in Hiner 207. The film examines the 20-year-old policy designed to curb China’s exploding population, which, due to cultural, social and economic factors that favor boys, has resulted in tens of thousands of girls ending up in orphanages across China. Hampden-Sydney College economics professor Sarana Thornton will moderate a discussion afterward. A mixer-type dance, featuring prizes and food, will be held Thursday, Nov. 16, from 8 to 10 p.m. in Lankford Ballroom. All events are free and open to the entire campus community.
