Jennifer Arthur named Longwood’s McGowan Scholar for 2006-07

Jennifer Lynn ArthurJennifer Lynn Arthur, a senior from Roanoke, was recently selected the William G. McGowan Scholar at Longwood University for 2006-07. She is earning a double major in economics and business administration with a concentration in accounting.

The McGowan Scholars program, made possible by the McGowan Charitable Fund, provides  selected colleges and universities with scholarships to assist business students. It funds one full-tuition scholarship for an undergraduate or graduate student at each school, which has to be accredited by AACSB International.

“The program recognizes academic achievement and excellence, and it is designed to encourage leadership ability, interpersonal skills, and a significant involvement in academic, campus and community activities,” said Melinda Fowlkes, assistant dean of Longwood’s College of Business & Economics. “It also recognizes excellence of character, a spirit of innovation and entrepreneurial potential.”

Arthur is a member of the Longwood Honors Program; Betta Gamma Sigma, an international honor society for business programs accredited by AACSB International; and Alpha Lambda Delta, a freshman honor society. She is president of the Baptist Collegiate Ministries, treasurer of Geist Chapter of Mortar Board, and a member of the Economics Club. She received the Andrew O’Brien Memorial Scholarship last year and the College of Business & Economics Scholarship in 2004, was selected to participate in a study-abroad program in Slovakia last summer, and has been a resident technology associate. She has participated in community activities such as the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and FACES, a Farmville-area food assistance program.

This summer Arthur is completing an internship with McLeod & Co., a Roanoke CPA firm. Upon graduating next year, she plans to work for a public CPA firm and earn her CPA license. She is a graduate of Northside High School in Roanoke and is the daughter of Roy and Dana Arthur.

She is the second McGowan Scholar at Longwood. David Ellis Jr. of Rocky Mount, who will graduate May 13, was the McGowan Scholar for 2005-06. Ellis will receive a degree in business administration with a concentration in finance and a minor in economics.
