Expert in political-military strategic planning to speak at Longwood as Woodrow Wilson Fellow

Charles BarryCharles Barry, a retired Army lieutenant colonel with more than 30 years’ experience in military operations and political-military strategic planning, will speak Monday, April 10, at 7 p.m. in Hiner 207 on The War On Terror: A Progress Report.

Barry, Longwood’s 2006 Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow, is president of Barry Consulting Inc., specializing in defense analysis and decision options for top-level government and private sector clients, which he founded in 1997. His talk is sponsored by the Civic Leadership Institute, part of Longwood’s participation in the American Democracy Project.

After a decorated field career (1969-1996) as an infantry officer and later as an aviation officer, Barry was appointed head of the Strategy Planning Staff of the United States European Command in Stuttgart, Germany, where he led planning efforts on U.S. strategy for Europe after the Cold War. He also has been special assistant to the director for NATO policy and senior political-military analyst for the Institute for National Strategic Studies, in which he focused on conflict prevention and resolution in the Balkans and briefed the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Barry, who will be on campus through April 13, has taught at several defense-related schools, presented classified papers and briefings to military and civilian leaders in the Department of Defense, co-authored Accelerating on the Run: From the War Room to the Boardroom, contributed to three other books, and published articles in numerous journals.
