19 March 2008 Longwood University to test new Siren Alert System: Thursday, April 3 at 3:30 p.m.
The emergency alert system will be tested simultaneously and will include a siren alert along with a public address voice message. Officials anticipate that the siren tones will be heard within a half-mile of the main campus and within a quarter-mile of the off-campus residence locations. The tests are designed to ensure that the emergency alert system works and to raise awareness on campus and within the Farmville community about the system’s existence. According to Dan Dillon, Longwood’s director of environmental health, safety and emergency management, “Longwood is an integral and inseparable part of Farmville. An emergency situation that impacts the campus will probably affect the town as well. For example, if a hurricane is approaching, it will not just be a campus concern. We think this alert system will serve both the campus and community.” The public address/siren warning system is part of a new multi-faceted emergency communication system implemented at the beginning of the 2007-08 academic year. Three new communication systems – text messaging, voice messaging, and the public address/siren warning system – are designed to communicate promptly with faculty, staff, and students in the event of an emergency. A new public address/siren warning system recently installed at Longwood University will be tested on Thursday, April 3 at 3:30 p.m. The emergency alert system will transmit a siren tone followed by a voice message stating that a test is being performed. The alert siren and voice message will be transmitted through three (3) strategically placed speaker arrays across campus and at Longwood’s off-campus apartment complexes (Lancer Park and Longwood Village) and the athletic fields at Johnston Drive.
