Longwood business honor society recognized as a Premier Chapter

Longwood University’s chapter of the business honor society Beta Gamma Sigma has for the seventh consecutive year been recognized as a “Premier Chapter” for its superior level of membership acceptance and promotional activities.

Beta Gamma Sigma annually extends invitations to the top seven percent of business juniors, the upper 10 percent of business seniors, and the highest 20 percent of business graduates. Chapters granted Premier status have had at least 85 percent of their invitations accepted. Some 94 percent of Longwood students (17 of 18) invited to join in 2003-2004 did so.

"Since its formation in the spring of 1999, the Longwood Beta Gamma Sigma chapter in the College of Business and Economics has achieved the status of Premier Chapter every year,” said Dr. Evelyn Hume, dean of the College of Business and Economics. “Students know that membership in this business honor society sends a strong, positive message to future employers."

Only 62 of the 417 Beta Gamma Sigma chapters at colleges and universities were selected as a Premier Chapter in 2004, recognizing their activities during the 2003-2004 academic year. With this status, Longwood’s chapter is eligible to award a $1,000 Beta Gamma Sigma scholarship in the 2005-2006 academic year and also is pre-qualified for consideration as an Outstanding Chapter, the highest honor for a collegiate chapter. The Longwood chapter has 114 student/alumni members and 18 faculty and staff members.

Founded in 1913, Beta Gamma Sigma is the honor society for AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Longwood's College of Business and Economics is one of only 34 undergraduate only business programs nationwide accredited by AACSB International.
