FARMVILLE, VA--It was the wish of the late
Carol Stoops Droessler, of Raleigh, that her sizable collection of books
and memorabilia relating to Lewis Carroll and his works go to Longwood
College. Her husband, Dr. Earl Droessler, and family honored that wish,
and on April 24 the collection was dedicated in her memory. Also in her
honor, Longwood vice president for institutional advancement Bobbie Burton
announced the Carol Stoops Droessler Scholarship, established by Mrs.
Droessler's family, classmates and friends.
Mrs. Droessler, class of
1950, was an active alumna of Longwood and served on the Alumni Board for
many years. In 1995 she received the Distinguished Alumni Community Service
Award .
Her collection numbers about
140 books and periodicals and also includes Lewis Carroll collectibles ranging
from paper dolls to paper-mache figures to elaborate ceramic bookends to note
cards, bookmarks, bookplates and commemorative stamps. It contains translations
of Alice in Wonderland in more than a dozen languages, including Bulgarian,
Estonian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Russian, Italian, Farsi, Assamese, Malay,
Nepali, Thai and Vietnamese. Biographies and criticisms focus on the life
and works of Lewis Carroll and include biographies of the real-life Alice
as well.
Mrs. Droessler joined the
Lewis Carroll Society of North America in 1981 and made contacts with other
enthusiasts throughout the U. S. and abroad. Her participation in the Alice
Collectors Network added newsletters, catalogs and online sources to her papers.
Selections from the Droessler
Collection may be viewed at Longwood College, Farmville Virginia, in the library's
second-floor Children's Collection Room. An appraisal of the collection will
be conducted in June.
The Carol Stoops Droessler
Scholarship fund exceeds $23,000 and will benefit students outside the state
of Virginia who attend Longwood with plans to teach in an elementary school.
The Droesslers have four daughters
and one son. Daughters Maureen and Martha and grand-daughter Madeline joined
Dr. Droessler at the dedication.
