28 January 2004 Richmond bank executive to speak at Longwood
Hill will be the fifth speaker in this year's Executive-in-Residence series by the College of Business & Economics, which is presented as a public service and made possible through the financial support of SunTrust and Philip Morris Companies. Hill was elected president and CEO of SunTrust Bank, Mid-Atlantic, based in Richmond, in August 2000 and chairman of the board in January 2001. A native of Crewe, where his family still owns a working farm, he began his banking career more than 30 years ago with United Virginia Bankshares, a SunTrust Bank predecessor. United Virginia Bankshares changed its name in 1987 to Crestar, which merged in 1998 with the Atlanta-based SunTrust Banks Inc., now one of the nation's largest commercial banking operations. "Leadership is the cornerstone of executive excellence, and it transcends all of today's issues - business, economic, and ethical," said Hill, who serves on the boards of numerous Richmond-area community organizations and is a member of the Virginia Business Council and co-chair of the Southeastern Economic Alliance. "Leadership is about sharing a vision and giving people a reason to go there with you." SunTrust Bank, Mid-Atlantic, encompasses Virginia, Maryland and Washington, D.C., and accounts for approximately one-third of SunTrust Bank's overall banking operations. The next speaker in this year's Executive-in-Residence Series will be Jean Clary Bagley, president of Century 21 Clary & Associates Inc., on March 24. The series will end with a Senior Banquet for students featuring guest speaker Willie E. Lanier, senior vice president, Wachovia Securities of Richmond.
