A Salute to Heroes
15 June
2001
Almost 8 weeks after the last smouldering embers of the Great Fire
of 2001 had died down, Longwood College hosted a special dinner and
reception to honor the firefighters, police officers, town officials,
and other who helped the college through the worst fire in its history.
Over 200 firefighters and their families attended the dinner last
night which was held in Longwood's Grand Dining Hall. Dr. Patricia
Cormier, president of Longwood College, presented the Presidential
Distinguished Service Award to each of the 13 fire companies that
helped to extinguish the fire that ravaged the historic center of
the college on April 24. At the beginning of the evening, Dr. Cormier
stated, "tonight is a celebration--a time to say thank you to those
who risked their lives to save Longwood College on that fateful night."
The Presidential Distinguished Service Award is given "only to those
who have served the college at the very highest level. It is the highest
honor that this institution can confer on individuals who are not
employees of Longwood College, and yet who embody the timeless ideals
of the Longwood citizen leader."
