Video about Islam, film on Middle East
to be shown at Longwood
A short video about Islam and a film on peacemaking
efforts in the
Middle East will be shown Wednesday, Nov. 13, at Longwood as part
of
International Awareness Week.
The 15-minute video "Women and Islam" will be shown at
noon in
Salon A of the dining hall. The video is an excerpt from "Muhammad:
Legacy
of a Prophet," which is the second in a series called The Islam
Project and
will be televised by PBS Dec. 18 at 9 p.m.
Any organization interested in showing the video in a learning
environment should call Lonnie Calhoun, Longwood's director of
multicultural affairs, at 395-2395. "The video is a powerful
learning tool,
and we are interested in partnering with any outside group,"
he said.
The Islam Project was developed by Active Voice, a nonprofit team
that "helps groups use social issue television programs and films
as tools
for community building, citizen engagement and partnership development."
The first film in the series, Muslims, aired in May.
Also as part of International Awareness Week, "If You Make it
Possible," a 75-minute film consisting of four personal, in-depth
portraits
of Israelis and Palestinians who have devoted their lives to non-violence
and coexistence, will be shown immediately after Women and Islam,
in the
same location. The film, made in 1996 by Lynn Feinerman, an American,
has
been called a "thought-provoking look at people from both sides
of the
Israeli/Palestinian struggle who have learned to respect and value
their
differences and are working to make living together in peace a possibility."
