Longwood College News Release

Main Tabb & South Ruffner Access
Procedures

03 May 2001

You may have heard from our friends or fellow students in French and South Tabb that residents were permitted to enter those residence halls on Thursday, May 3, 2001 and Friday, May 4, 2001. The moving plan that was developed and implemented was very successful and has served as a model for the plan we have laid out for your entry into Tabb or South Ruffner. It is critical that you help us to manage this process in an orderly way by adhering to your assigned moving time and respecting the area around the Colonnades Complex as secure with strictly controlled access.

WHEN MAY YOU RETURN?

Please see the Tabb and South Ruffner Moving Schedule (CLICK HERE). Please arrive during the first hour of your assigned time. Only the resident and one additional person to assist the resident will be permitted to enter the appropriate residence hall. This is in response to occupancy restrictions imposed by the State Fire Marshall.

WHAT IF YOU CANNOT RETURN DURING YOUR ASSIGNED TIME??

Special arrangements are possible for out of state students and residents with extreme circumstances that prohibit them from returning to campus during assigned times. If you require special arrangements, please call 804-395-2080, immediately to arrange a date and time during business hours. Moving services provided during scheduled times may not apply to those with special arrangements. No one will be allowed to enter the residence halls between Thursday, May 10 at 5:00 p.m. and Monday, May 13 at 9:00 a.m.

WHERE MUST YOU GO?

As you enter campus, from Main Street proceed onto Madison Street toward the intersection of Madison and Pine Street. Turn right at the Heating Plant (an officer will be posted and directing traffic) into parking lot behind Coyner (Information Technology). From there, you will be directed by Campus Police to park either behind Coyner or in front of Graham (Campus Police). Students will be permitted to enter buildings only at scheduled times (see enclosed schedule). After your belongings have been removed from your residence hall and gathered on Chamber Street, you will be instructed by Campus Police to move your car into one of the reserved loading spaces on Chamber Street. Residents of Tabb and South Ruffner will enter and exit through Tabb Circle entrances.

WHAT CONDITION SHOULD YOU EXPECT IN YOUR ROOM OR RESIDENCE HALL?

Presently, rooms are being videotaped to record contents and the condition of rooms. Areas of Tabb and South Ruffner Halls have been affected by smoke, fire, and water. Some rooms are virtually untouched. In some cases, building surfaces, such as floors, ceilings, and walls are damaged. Continuing remediation efforts are underway. Drying machinery and other equipment is in use inside and outside of these buildings. Highly absorbent materials, including furniture, carpets, mattresses, and bedding have been removed from some rooms and placed in a secure outside location to dry. You are asked to claim these items or indicate your desire to have them disposed of while you are on campus during your designated time. Clothes and other material that were on the floor of your residence hall room (when evacuation occurred) have been stacked on furniture, especially beds, in the room where they were originally located. You and your roommate (if this applies to you) will be asked to work cooperatively to separate your belongings.

WHAT ASSISTANCE WILL BE PROVIDED TO YOU?

Professional movers will be available to assist you with moving items from your room to the exterior of the building on Chamber Street. Given possible trip hazards in hallways, students are asked only to pack belongings into provided boxes, within their individual rooms. Movers will carry boxed belongings from student rooms to outside the building where you will collect your belongings for loading purposes into your vehicle. Plastic bags and dumpsters will be available for garbage. Students will be expected to remove all items from residence hall rooms. Residence Education and Housing staff will be available to collect keys and to assist in any way needed. Room condition reports will not be used and damage charges will not be assessed in student rooms. Counselors and campus officials will be available at a community gathering location behind Lancaster Building to answer questions and provide assistance.

We look forward to seeing you during your designated moving time and to assisting you with your moving efforts. With your cooperation and our planning, this process will certainly be an effective and efficient way to retrieve your belongings.
