RE: The Gray Step

The "gray step" that was located on the threshold of the main entrance to Ruffner Hall has been located. The slate step, which had been worn down over the years by the footsteps of thousands of Longwood students, holds special significance for alumni and friends of Longwood College.

Dave Harnage, Executive Vice President for Administration and Finance, and a crew from facilities management worked hard to remove the rubble from the front of Ruffner this morning and located the step around 11:30 am. The "Step" did sustain a little damage, but it survived and will be fine.

Dave Harnage and his crew spent additional time and effort today trying to recover any artifacts or items that might be of historical significance. They also located the gold-colored finial and brass base that supported the American and Commonwealth flags. All of these items (including bricks) are being set aside for posterity and future use. Photos of these items will be posted on the Longwood web site as soon as possible.

As reported earlier, the Rotunda paintings, Presidential paintings, bronze plaques, and "Joanie on the Stoney" had been removed earlier in preparation for the renovation of the Ruffners. Additionally, the front doors for the main entrance to Ruffner were stored away several months ago to protect them during the renovation project.

A second flare-up occurred in Grainger Hall late this morning and has been extinguished.

At this time, there is no news to report regarding the investigation that is underway. As part of the investigation site, Tabb, French, and South Ruffner residence halls will remain closed until the investigation is completed.
