RECOVERY OPERATIONS
GRAINGER HALL

30 April 2001

Recovery operations are underway in Grainger Hall, the only building within the Ruffner Complex that was operational when the fire of April 24 struck the campus of Longwood College. Grainger housed 30 faculty members of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences along with state-of-the-art classroom facilities. The building had undergone a complete renovation and upgrading in 1992.

Through the weekend, employees of INRECON began removing the belongings and personal items from the faculty offices within Grainger. Supervisor Phillip J. Gordon explained the recovery process as follows: INRECON employees entered the ground floor of Grainger and accessed the faculty member's office. Wooden carts, made on site, were used to move faculty materials from the faculty office to the outside where the faculty member had an opportunity to examine his or her materials. The faculty member could discard items not wanted and take any memorabilia home. The remaining materials, which were primarily damaged by smoke and water, were then wheeled into lower Blackwell where a drying station was set up. Faculty materials are placed in a cubicle and warm, dry air is being pumped into the area 24 hours a day. The drying process will take about 48 hours or so. Throughout the process, INRECON is maintaining an inventory of discarded items, items for insurance claims, and items destined for the drying room.

This morning, Dr.Craig Challender, Professor of English, and Joanna Baker, Assistant Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, went through Dr. Challender's materials - SEE RECOVERY PHOTOS.
