Water leak damages walls and flooring in West Ruffner Hall

Photo of Water DamageA weekend water leak on the third floor of West Ruffner Hall, believed to have originated from a defective coupling valve in a sink in a faculty lounge, has damaged some offices, walls, insulation, carpeting, and wood flooring in the recently rededicated Ruffner Hall on the campus of Longwood University. The water damage, caused apparently when water seeped down through the walls, is isolated to three to four offices and adjacent areas on all four floors on the south side (rear) hallways of West Ruffner and storage and mechanical areas in the basement.

Officials from English Construction, the original contractor, were also on campus to evaluate the situation and determine the exact cause of the leak. According to Galen May, interim director of capital planning and construction, "We are still investigating the extent of damage with our contractors and sub-contractors. There does not appear to be any serious damage to our infrastructure, and it's business as usual for the rest of Ruffner Hall." The 83,143 square foot Ruffner Hall houses 22 classrooms, four academic departments and the offices of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the deans of Graduate Studies and the College of Arts and Sciences.
