Longwood retirees honored at banquet

Jazz music, a video that poked fun at the golf carts on campus, and awards for Longwood faculty and staff who have served a combined total of 1,305 years highlighted the annual Employee Service Awards Program and ARAMARK Banquet, held Feb. 25 in Dorrill Dining Hall.

In keeping with the theme, Jazz It Up, the Longwood Jazz Combo, featuring Rick Neller and Dr. Charles Kinzer, provided appropriate music. A Keystone Kops-style video lampooning the seemingly ubiquitous golf carts, produced by William Lynn and Rick Neller, was shown. Before the video was shown, President Patricia Cormier made her grand entrance in the Grand Dining Room in one of the carts, driven by Police Chief Charles Lowe.

Recently retired faculty members who attended and were honored were Dr. Pat Barber (Natural Sciences) and Dr. Robert May and Dr. E.T. Noone (Mathematics and Computer Sciences). Recently retired staff members who attended were Brenda Ferguson (Conferences & Scheduling), Mildred Mason-Flippen (Greenwood Library), Donald Smith (Material Management) and Don Twombley (Natural Sciences).

Employees also were honored for their service. Those who received five-year certificates were Peggy Agee, Stephanie Barker, Dr. David Coles, Denise Hill, Nancy Joel, Alecia Knox, Liz Kocevar-Weidinger, Ellen Masters, Patricia Ness, David Pennell, Dr. James Riley, Dr. Cathy Roy, Lisa Seamster, Susan Sullivan and Crystal Taylor.

Also, Dr. Bill Brown and Jackie Wallace received 20-year pins for their service to the Commonwealth, not necessarily at Longwood.

"I continue to give thanks for the privilege of serving this community," Dr. Cormier said in her remarks. "The staff and faculty of this institution are what makes Longwood special. Handsome and beautiful buildings will never replace the heart of Longwood – its people. You have survived fires, floods, hurricanes, and ice storms – and you do it with ever-present strength and determination. I am amazed at the energy and dedication each of you gives to this university daily. No matter the obstacle, Longwood is firmly grounded with dedicated faculty and staff."
