Longwood and Virginia Community Colleges sign Systemwide guaranteed admissions agreement

Longwood President Patricia Cormier and Virginia Community College System Chancellor Glenn DuBoisAfter signing guaranteed admissions agreements with each of Virginia's 23 community colleges, Longwood President Patricia Cormier met with Virginia Community College System Chancellor Glenn DuBois Monday to ink the final agreement cementing a systemwide agreement that will allow community college graduates to enter Longwood as juniors – guaranteed.

Cormier has spent the summer traveling to Virginia's community colleges signing the agreement individually with each president. The agreement allows students that obtain their associate of arts or associate of science degree with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5 to transfer all of their credits to Longwood.

The agreement is an outgrowth of the new emphasis on transfer as stated in the Higher Education Restructuring Act approved by the Governor and General Assembly in 2005, which specifies that state four-year colleges and universities should adopt systemwide transfer agreements with Virginia's community colleges.

Longwood has had transfer agreements with the community colleges since 1991, but this new agreement adds the "guaranteed admission" component that allows Virginia's students and their families a seamless pathway to the baccalaureate degree from community colleges.

Cormier praised the quality of graduates of the Virginia Community College System and noted that "associate of arts and/or science degree holders have graduated from Longwood above the 80 percent rate with little to no change in their grade point averages."

DuBois praised Cormier's initiative in presenting the guaranteed admission agreement and said "Dr. Cormier is a strong advocate for community colleges and for the higher education community in the Commonwealth." The agreement goes into effect immediately.
