Dates to Remind Your Student About

Annual Events, Holidays & Academic Dates (Academic Year 2009-2010)

August 2009

  • New Student Orientation – August 20
    New Students arrive and participate in New Lancer Days
  • Last Day to Register for Fall Semester – August 21
    All students with intentions to attend fall semester classes must be registered by this date.
  • All Students Return – August 22
    All students are permitted to begin moving in. Students are not allowed to move in earlier than this date unless permitted by an organization, program, etc.
  • First Day of Classes – August 24
    All classes begin at 8 a.m.
  • Last Day to Add/Drop Classes – August 31
    After 5 pm on this date, students wishing to drop a class must go through the withdrawal process and a "W" will appear on their final transcript (Please note the withdrawal deadline as well).

September

  • Labor Day Holiday – September 7
    No classes in observance of holiday. The University will be closed. Classes resume 8 a.m. on September 8.
  • Spring 2010 Schedule Due – September 8
  • Convocation – September 10
    Convocation is an annual Longwood tradition for graduating seniors. The ceremony is held in the Jarman Auditorium. Seniors participate in the tradition of Senior Capping where friends decorate caps and present them to the graduate at this ceremony.
  • Family Weekend – September 25-27
    Come visit Longwood and participate in the weekend festivities. Find out more about Family Weekend.

October

  • Oktoberfest Weekend – October 2-3
    This annual celebration is a proud Longwood Tradition for everyone and free too! Visit the Mortar Board’s website for a tentative schedule.
  • Grade Estimates Due – October 5
    Mid-semester grades are available for student’s to view. The estimates provide students with a marker of their success in a particular class. Grade estimates are issued to all first-year students and any other students making a "D" or "F." Under FERPA, student grades are not to be released to anyone besides the student without consent by the student.
  • Fall Break – No Classes – October 12-13
    There are no classes on the 12th and 13th for fall break. Classes resume 8 a.m. on October 14.
  • Deadline to Withdraw – October 14
    Students wishing to drop a class after the add/drop deadline may only withdraw from a class. This means a “W” will be recorded on the students’ final transcript. After 5 p.m. on this withdrawal deadline, there are no other opportunities to drop a class without penalty and all grades received will be final.
  • Summer 2010 Schedule Due – October 29

November

  • Advising & Registration Begin for Spring 2010 – November 2
    Registration for Spring 2010 classes opens up and students should begin to meet with their advisors for assistance with scheduling. For students with less than 45 credits, a meeting with their advisor is required to obtain a necessary pin number for online registration. Advising ends on November 13th.
  • Thanksgiving Break – November 25-29
    No classes 25th – 27th in observance of the holiday. The University will be closed the 25th – 27th. Classes resume 8 a.m. on November 30th.

December

  • Last Day of Classes – December 4
    Fall semester classes end.
  • Reading Day – December 5
    Students are given a reading day to prepare for final exams.
  • Final Exams – December 7-11
    Final exams are administered during the week of the 7th – 11th. Exam periods are dependent upon the class times.
  • Final Grades Due – December 14
    Final grades are available for student’s to view. Under FERPA, student grades are not to be released to anyone besides the student without consent by the student.

January 2010

  • New Student Orientation – January 11
    New Students for the spring semester arrive and participate in New Lancer Days.
  • Last Day to Register for Spring Semester – January 11
    All students with intentions to attend spring semester classes must be registered by this date.
  • Classes Begin for Spring Semester– January 11
    All classes begin at 4 p.m.
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday – No Classes – January 18
    No classes in observance of the holiday. The University will be closed as well. Classes resume 8 a.m. on January 19th.
  • Last Day to Add/Drop Classes – January 19
    After this date, students wishing to drop a class must go through the withdrawal process and a “W” will appear on their final transcript (Please note the withdrawal deadline as well).

February

    No classes the week of March 8-12. The University will be closed on March 8th. Classes resume 8 a.m. on March 15th.

    Registration for Summer and Fall 2010 classes opens up and students should begin to meet with their advisors for assistance with scheduling. April

  • Spring Weekend – April 9-10

  • Last Day of Classes – April 23
    Spring semester classes end

    Students are given a reading day to prepare for final exams.

May
