Dates to Remind Your Student About

Annual Events, Holidays & Academic Dates (Academic Year 2011-2012)

August 2011

  • New Student Orientation - August 18
    New Students arrive and participate in New Lancer Days
  • Apartment Residents Return - August 19
    Students living in Lancer Park, Longwood Village and Longwood Landings are permitted to begin moving in. Students are not allowed to move in earlier than this date unless permitted by an organization, program, etc.
  • Residential Students Return - August 20
    All returning students living in campus housing may move into their assigned residence hall.
  • First Day of Classes - August 22
    All classes begin at 8 a.m.
  • Last Day to Add/Drop Classes - August 29
    After 5 pm on this date, students wishing to drop a class must go through the withdrawal process and a "W" will appear on their final transcript (Please note the withdrawal deadline as well).

September

  • Labor Day Holiday - September 5
    No classes in observance of holiday. The University will be closed. Classes resume 8 a.m. on September 7.
  • Convocation - September 8
    Convocation is an annual Longwood tradition for graduating seniors. The ceremony is held in the Jarman Auditorium. Seniors participate in the tradition of Senior Capping where friends decorate caps and present them to the graduate at this ceremony.
  • Family Weekend - September 23-25
    Come visit Longwood and participate in the weekend festivities. Find out more about Family Weekend.
  • Grade Estimates Due - September 26
    Mid-semester grades are available for student's to view. The estimates provide students with a marker of their success in a particular class. Grade estimates are issued to all first-year students and any other students making a "D" or "F." Under FERPA, student grades are not to be released to anyone besides the student without consent by the student.

October

  • Oktoberfest Weekend - September 30 - October 1
    This annual celebration is a proud Longwood Tradition for everyone and free too! Visit the Mortar Board's website for a tentative schedule.
  • Fall Break - No Classes - October 10-11
    There are no classes on the 11th and 12th for fall break. Classes resume 8 a.m. on October 13.
  • Deadline to Withdraw - October 12
    Students wishing to drop a class after the add/drop deadline may only withdraw from a class. This means a "W" will be recorded on the students' final transcript. After 5 p.m. on this withdrawal deadline, there are no other opportunities to drop a class without penalty and all grades received will be final.

November

  • Advising & Registration Begin for Spring 2011 - November 7
    Registration for Spring 2011 classes opens up and students should begin to meet with their advisors for assistance with scheduling. For students with less than 45 credits, a meeting with their advisor is required to obtain a necessary pin number for online registration. Advising ends on November 18.
  • Thanksgiving Break - November 23-27
    No classes 23rd - 27th in observance of the holiday. The University will be closed the 24th - 27th. Classes resume 8 a.m. on November 28.

December

  • Last Day of Classes - December 2
    Fall semester classes end.
  • Reading Day - December 3
    Students are given a reading day to prepare for final exams.
  • Final Exams - December 5-9
    Final exams are administered during the week of the 5th - 9th. Exam periods are dependent upon the class times.
  • Final Grades Due - December 12
    Final grades are available for student's to view. Under FERPA, student grades are not to be released to anyone besides the student without consent by the student.

January 2012

  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday - No Classes - January 16
    No classes in observance of the holiday. The University will be closed as well. Classes resume at 4pm on January 17.
  • New Student Orientation - January 17
    New Students arrive for the spring semester.
  • Classes Begin for Spring Semester - January 17 at 4pm
    All classes begin at 4 p.m.
  • Last Day to Add/Drop Classes - January 24
    After this date, students wishing to drop a class must go through the withdrawal process and a "W" will appear on their final transcript (Please note the withdrawal deadline as well).

February

    Registration for Summer and Fall 2011 classes opens up and students should begin to meet with their advisors for assistance with scheduling. April

  • Spring Weekend - April 13 - 14

May

  • Final Exams - May 1 - May 4
    Final exams are administered during the week of May 2-May 6. Exam periods are dependent upon the class times.
  • Final Grades Due - May 7
    Final grades are available at 8:30 a.m. for student's to view. Under FERPA, student grades are not to be released to anyone besides the student without consent by the student.
