Parents Council Grant Information 2011-2012

Edward Bloor on Writing for the Youth Market
The Parents Council awarded $1000 to partially fund a lecture and reception for the award winning children's and young adult literature writer, Edward Bloor. Bloor is the author of seven novels for children and young adults, including multiple award winning, Tangerine.

Young Men's Conference
The Parents Council awarded $500 to partially fund a conference that addresses the importance of a college education for young men. The conference will focus on high school age young men and their plans to attend college after high school. The mission of the Young Men's Conference is to "assist young men in their growth mentally, intellectually, emotionally, and socially in order to help them become better citizens for tomorrow."

L-CERT Grant
The Council awarded $1900 to fully fund this project to develop the Longwood-Campus Emergency Response Team (L-CERT). In case of an emergency on campus, this group will provide life-safety measures during medical emergencies until the Prince Edward County volunteer emergency services arrive to campus.

Longwood Center for the Visual Arts Volunteer Center (LCVA)
The Parents Council partially funded this project in the amount of $1050 to create a Volunteer Center for the LCVA. The Center will give the nearly 1,300 volunteers annually (300-400 Longwood students) a place to check-in for projects, prepare for workshops, and create props for exhibits.

Operation ESHR 2012_LU Wounded Warrior Committee
The Parents Council partially funded this project in the amount of $600 to support the transportation of students to visit wounded warriors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Student Athletic Advisory Council (SAAC) T-Shirt Swap
The Parents Council partially funded this project in the amount of $600. SAAC will organize a t-shirt swap in order to increase Lancer Pride on campus. Students can bring in a shirt from another university or college and swap it out for a Longwood t-shirt.

Camerata Singers with Guest Artist
The Parents Council fully funded this project in the amount of $500 to partially sponsor a guest artist to perform with the Camerata Singers. The artist will work collaboratively with the Camerata Singers on a performance in April, 2012. This experience provides the Camerata Singers exposure to an outside artist as well as the artist exposure to Longwood's Camerata Singers.

February French Film Festival
The Parents Council fully funded this project in the amount of $400 to provide assistance for the February French Film Festival. This event exposes Longwood students to French cinema, culture, and language.

Dry Erase Markers Gone Wild!
The Parents Council partially funded this project in the amount of $800. The students immensely enjoy using dry erase markers on glass tables, whiteboards, and white board tables in the library to synthesize their ideas whether working in groups or individually. The funding is to purchase additional white boards, dry erase markers, and cleaning supplies for the students to use in the library.


Student Diversity & Inclusion Council
The Council awarded $500 (partially funded) to the Student Diversity & Inclusion Council to sponsor a speaker and program surrounding the empowerment of women and to bring awareness to women's rights within the Longwood community.

Spanish Film Festival
The Parents Council awarded $520 to partially fund the Spanish Film Festival. This student organized educational event will produce a greater understanding and appreciation of the Spanish language and culture.

English 400 Dinner With Town Council
Requested: $560
Recommended: $560 (fully funded)

The Parents Council provided full funding for this project in the amount of $560. The funds will be used for the students in Dr. Heather Lettner-Rust's English 400 class to host a dinner for the Farmville Town Council members. The dinner will provide an opportunity for Longwood students to witness citizen leaders in action while further building invaluable relationships between the town and University. The dinner aligns perfectly with the course description for General Education Goal 13 and English 400.

Phi Beta Lambda- State Conference
Requested: $360
Recommended: $360 (fully funded)

The Parents Council fully funded this project in the amount of $360 for the students of Phi Beta Lambda to attend a the PBL National Conference. This project places Longwood students in a larger forum and past history indicates that this event has been very successful and academically inclined.
