Research
There are several active research programs in the physics department. Contact specific faculty members for more information.
Below are some of the projects on which Longwood physics students are currently working:
Farnsworth Fusion Reactor
Over the Summer of 2007, physics major Andrew Grzankowski worked
with Longwood faculty member Dr. Keith Rider (Chemistry) to construct a
Farnsworth Fusion Reactor. This semester, Andrew is beefing up the
power supply and modifying the electrodes to achieve more
efficient fusion reactions. Learn more about this project by clicking here.
Scanning Tunneling Microscope
Physic/Engineering major Donald Moffett has been working with
Dr. Chris Moore on the construction of a scanning tunneling microscope
(STM). Such a microscope produces a real-space images of a surface with
atomic-resolution. Its operation relies on the quantum mechanical tunneling of electrons through a finite potential barrier. Learn more about this project by clicking here.
