Dr. Patricia Cormier Receives Service Award from Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools

Patricia P. Cormier, Ph. D., president of Longwood University in Farmville, Va., recently received a James T. Rogers Meritorious Service Award from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) at the association's 110th annual conference held in Atlanta. AASCU Annual Meeting - Global Forces: Shaping Higher Education in the 21st Century

Dr. Patricia P. Cormier, president of Longwood University and Longwood professor Dr. Raymond Cormier, recently attended the AASCU annual meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona. This year’s theme, “Global Forces: Shaping Higher Education in the 21st Century,” was set by the Board, following Dr. Cormier’s suggestions. The program was a follow-up to the international flavor of the Summer Council meeting in Montréal last July.

Cormier serves as Chair of the Board of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), a higher education organization whose membership is comprised of more than 430 colleges, universities, and systems of public higher education throughout the United States and its territories. Longwood University and Rappahannock Community College Sign Guaranteed Admissions Agreement

In support of Governor Mark Warner's dedication to post-secondary education for all Virginia citizens and to demonstrate Longwood University's commitment to and interest in community college graduates, throughout the summer, President Patricia Cormier will sign a guaranteed admission agreement with Virginia's 23 community colleges. President Cormier visits Morocco to explore partnership opportunities

In January Longwood President Patricia Cormier was part of a delegation from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) that went to Morocco. The delegation of eight presidents/chancellors and AASCU's director of international education met with 12 of the 14 Moroccan university presidents. The purpose of the presidential mission was to explore opportunities for educational partnerships and exchanges between AASCU campuses and the colleges and universities of Morocco. Longwood's Center for Citizens Scholars Named The Cormier Center for Citizen Scholars

When Longwood University successfully completed its first comprehensive campaign, a turning point: The Campaign for Longwood, in July 2003 it did so a year ahead of schedule having raised over $33 million. Seven objectives were the focus of the campaign, one of which, The Center for Citizen Scholars, had particular meaning to Longwood President Patricia Cormier and her husband Dr. Raymond Cormier. In appreciation of the Cormiers' dedication to the Citizen Scholar program, the Longwood Board of Visitors recently adopted a resolution naming the program The Cormier Center for Citizen Scholars. President Cormier elected to AASCU Board of Directors

President Patricia Cormier has been elected chair-elect of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) board of directors. She was elected during AASCU's annual meeting Nov. 23-25 in Carlsbad, California. She has served on the 16-member board since November 2000 when she was elected to a three-year term. AASCU is a higher education association representing more than 430 public colleges and universities and higher education systems across the United States and the U.S. territories. [Posted 12/17/03]
