Self-Assignment
What is the Residency Requirement?
Longwood is a residential institution that features residence life education focusing on student learning and personal development as part of its distinct academic mission. Therefore, students are required to live in Longwood manage housing unless the Office of Residential and Commuter Life (RCL) approves an exception. Housing and Meal Plan Contracts are for the entire academic year (August through May).
Procedure
Continuing students must participate in the next academic year room sign-up process and follow all guidelines established by RCL. Prior to this assignment process, students are required be registered, or register in the immediate future, for at least 12 credits for the fall semester.
Exceptions
Applications for exceptions to the residency requirement for continuing students must be submitted to RCL prior to room sign-ups. Leases or other living arrangements should not be confirmed until exceptions are verified in writing from RCL. Letters of exception will be distributed via LU email accounts.
Exceptions:
- Non-traditional age - reaching 23 prior to the beginning of the fall semester.
- Married - verified with a marriage license.
- Living at home - a notarized letter from parent(s) or legal guardian(s) required.
- Part-time student - enrolling in less than 12 credit hours (both fall and spring semesters).
- Students with 89 or more Longwood University recognized credits - applicants must have 89 credit hours completed by the end of the spring semester. Application required prior to advertised deadline.
Note: Students who are offered exceptions will be expected to participate in an "off-campus orientation meeting" and to provide the University with an accurate off-campus address.
What is full occupancy?
Full occupancy indicates every bed space within a chosen assignment must be occupied by an eligible residential student. This means students who sign-up during our Apartment or Main Campus sign-up processes must have obtained the required information (Name, LancerNet Id, RMSID, building preference, floor preference and desired Meal Plan) from enough people to fill the assignment location.
