Residential and Commuter Life Staff
Executive Director- Residential and Commuter Life: The Executive Director- Residential and Commuter Life oversees all functions of Residential and Commuter Life. The position is responsible for the direction, coordination, and management of all aspects of Longwood’s residential and commuter programs, including budget and long term planning. This position also directly supervises the Associate Director- Housing, Associate Director- Off Campus Living, Assistant Director- On Campus Living, Technology Coordinator and Office Manager/Administrative Assistant. He/she also provides guidance in the supervision of the Residence Education Coordinators, Apartment Manager, Assignments Manager, and the various graduate and undergraduate student staff members. He/she also focuses on various programs, including the training and selection of the student staff members. Moreover, he/she also serves as the primary liaison between the department and the various constituents. The Associate Director- Housing oversees Residential and Commuter Life’s occupancy and facilities management programs for both the main campus residence halls and the Longwood managed apartment communities. He/she serves as the department’s liaison with the maintenance and housekeeping staffs. He/she also serves as the co-supervisor of the Apartment Manager position who serves as the departmental liaison with the Longwood Real Estate Foundation. He/she supervises the Assignment Manager and works with this position to coordinate the room assignment, damage billing, and room change processes. Moreover, he/she works with the Technology Coordinator, who serves as the departmental expert on the RMS (Residential Management System), our computerized housing program. He/she develops the timeline for the departmental housing assignment and off campus release processes, and he/she coordinates our opening and closing processes. The Associate Director coordinates all billing and residence hall safety programs, and he/she serves as the liaison and contact with the various vendors that provide services for our department. Associate Director- Off Campus Living: The Associate Director- Off Campus Living oversees Longwood’s commuter program and serves as the departmental liaison with the Town of Farmville and the local landlords. This position is also responsible for the supervision and management of Residential and Commuter Life’s (RCL) apartment communities and serves as a co-supervisor for three master’s level professional Residence Education Coordinators (REC). He/she also directly supervises the Graduate Assistant- Front Desk Management. The Associate Director- Off Campus Living serves as an integral part of Longwood’s citizen leader mission and provides leadership for the department’s response to student issues and programmatic initiatives. This person serves as a member of the Central Office Team and will work collaboratively with faculty and other staff members to address student needs, concerns, attitudes, and interests. Assistant Director- On Campus Living: The Assistant Director- On Campus Living is responsible for the supervision and management of the residential experience for Longwood’s traditional residence halls. This person will serve as a co-supervisor for four master’s level professional Residence Education Coordinators (REC) and the indirect supervision of two graduate assistants. This position is also responsible for the oversight of the student staff selection, training, and evaluation of the Resident Assistant staff. The Assistant Director- On Campus Living serves as an integral part of Longwood’s citizen leader mission and provides leadership for the department’s response to student issues and programmatic initiatives. This person serves as a member of the Central Office Team and will work collaboratively with faculty and other staff members to address student needs, concerns, attitudes, and interests. Residence Education Coordinator: The seven (7) Residence Education Coordinators (RECs) are responsible for the day-to-day administration, supervision, and management of their assigned residence hall community or Longwood-managed apartment complex. RECs serve as an integral part of Longwood’s citizen leader mission. They also provide leadership for the residence education programs through their work with residential students and their supervision of Resident Assistants. They work collaboratively with faculty and other staff members to address student needs, concerns, attitudes, and interests. The Technology Coordinator is responsible for the department’s computer programs and systems. This person works closely with the Associate Director-Housing, Assignments Manager, Information and Instructional Technology Services (IITS), and Residential Management System (RMS) to ensure that the on-line housing application and assignments process works effectively. This staff member is also responsible for the management of the departmental website and the inventory of the department’s IT equipment. The Apartment Manager is the liaison between the Longwood Real Estate Foundation which owns the three Longwood-managed apartment communities and RCL who monitors the educational environment and coordinates the response to student issues. This position has a working knowledge of the Foundation’s buildings, grounds, and resources and coordinates the response to facilities and maintenance issues. Also, the person in this position addresses resident and parent concerns regarding the facilities and coordinates the supervision of the three separate reception desks. The Assignments Manager works closely with the Associate Director- Housing to coordinate the occupancy processes for the main campus residence halls and Longwood-managed apartment communities. This position is responsible for the room assignment and room change processes. He/she also manages the room damage billing process, commencement housing process, summer school occupancy management, and the processes involving students remaining in the halls over the various breaks. Finally, this position provides administrative support for the Associate Director- Housing. Office Manager/Administrative Assistant to the Executive Director: The Office Manager/Administrative Assistant to the Executive Director coordinates the department’s customer service and public relations programs. This position supervises a staff of student workers who respond to phone and email inquiries from students and parents. This person also coordinates the editing, printing, and distribution of departmental documents. Moreover, this position monitors the various departmental budgets and coordinates the department’s purchases. He/she coordinates the departmental filing systems and provides primary administrative support for the Executive Director- Residential and Commuter Life. Graduate Assistant- Front Desk Management: The Graduate Assistant- Front Desk Management is responsible for the day-to-day administration, supervision, and management of the residence hall front desk operations for the traditional residence halls. This person serves as the direct supervisor for five Desk Supervisors and an indirect supervisor for 50-75 Desk Aides. This staff member works with the Associate Director- Off Campus Living and Apartment Manager to recruit, select, and coordinate procedural and customer service training for all of the desk staff. He/she also coordinates residence hall staff and student key distribution and assists RCL staff with residence hall opening and closing activities. Graduate Assistant- Graduate Hall Director: The Graduate Hall Director- works collaboratively with a Residence Education Coordinator to address student needs, concerns, attitudes, and interests. Together, they are responsible for the day-to-day administration, supervision, and management of a Residence Hall. The person in this role serves as an integral part of Longwood’s citizen leader mission and provides leadership for the residence education programs through his/her work with residential students and the supervision of 4 to 5 Resident Assistants. The Head Resident Assistants (HRAs) are undergraduate student employees and campus leaders who have excelled as Resident Assistants in the past. Those students serving in this role serve as an RA for an assigned community, but they also serve as a mentor for their colleagues and work closely to assist their supervisor with many administrative and programmatic responsibilities. The Resident Assistants (RAs) are undergraduate student employees and campus leaders who are trained to work with an assigned residential community in our main campus residence halls and the Longwood managed apartments. Their primary role is to work with their residents to develop communities and ensure a positive experience for those living in the residence halls through programming, policy enforcement, and assisting students with their various concerns. The Desk Supervisors are undergraduate students who assist with the day-to-day management of the service desks in the traditional residence halls and the Longwood managed apartments. They work closely with the Apartment Manager and Graduate Assistant- Front Desk Management to supervise the Desk Aides, coordinate development activities for their assigned team, and ensure that the reception desks run in a professional and effective manner. Typically, those students working in the main campus residence halls must qualify for Federal Work Study; however, there is a little more flexibility for those working in the apartment communities who must qualify for either Federal Work Study or College Work Study. The Desk Aides (DAs) are undergraduate students who provide frontline service at the reception desks in the main campus residence halls and Longwood managed apartments. They provide assistance to residents and guests and serve as a liaison for the department. Moreover, they serve an integral role in our safety and security program by reporting situations and fulfilling various tasks during emergency situations. Typically, those students working in the main campus residence halls must qualify for Federal Work Study; however, there is a little more flexibility for those working in the apartment communities who must qualify for either Federal Work Study or College Work Study. The Facilities Assistants (FAs) are undergraduate students who provide an important service to the department and the students living in the residence halls and Longwood managed apartments. They assist the Associate Director- Housing with the management of common area furnishings and other administrative tasks. They also respond to minor maintenance issues and move residence hall furniture as necessary. Typically, these students must be eligible for Federal Work Study. The Programming Center Assistants are undergraduate students who monitor the RCL Programming Center in the Cunninghams. They develop bulletin board ideas and assist the RAs with their programming initiatives. They also maintain the inventory of the department’s supplies and audio visual equipment. Student Office Assistant- Central Office: The Student Office Assistants- Central Office assist with the day-to-day operation of the RCL Central Office. Their primary role is to answer the phone, respond to email, and assist walk-in customers. They also fulfill a number of administrative tasks for the various people who work within the department. Typically, these students must be eligible for Federal Work Study. The Student Office Managers are responsible for providing administrative support to their assigned Residence Education Coordinator. Their responsibilities tend to include filing, copying, scheduling, and various administrative tasks. Other special projects are occasionally assigned by their supervisor.
