Outdoor Trip Schedule
To Sign Up for a Trip come by the Campus Recreation Office in the Health & Wellness Center, 9am - 5pm, Monday - Friday and pay the trip fee.
Campus Recreation accepts cash or checks. Refunds are available for cancellations if 5 days notice is provided by the participant or for cancellations made by Longwood Outdoors.
Basic Stand Up Paddle(SUP): We are teaming up with Black Dog Paddle to get you hooked on this fun new paddle sport! This class will help develop a strong solid foundation of skills. Proper instruction at the beginning will create a safer, fun, and faster learning experience. Topics covered: Introduction to board control on land and water, proper efficient should safe paddle strokes, gear, safety, and having fun. We will finish up with a tour of the Sandy River Reservoir, a natural haven just outside of town. Board, paddle, PFD, instructor and transportation are all provided.
Cost: $50, sign-up deadline: September 5th
Fall Break Backpacking: There is no better way to see the wilderness in the fall than by backpacking along the Appalachian Trail. Be prepared to hike moderately strenuous routes averaging 8 miles per day to stunning views and primitive campsites. We will provide the backpacks, all the camping/cooking equipment, guides, transportation and all trip meals. You bring a good pair of hiking boots and a passion for outdoor adventure.
Cost: $55, sign-up deadline: October 9th
Extreme Day Hike: Join us on this moderately strenuous 5.8 mile day hike loop in the George Washington National Forest. Enjoy spectacular views atop meadow-like landscapes. We will spend all day in the area, hiking off the ridge top after sunset. November weather in the area can be cold, so be sure to bring the right clothes, your camera, and a sack lunch. Leaders, snacks and headlamps will be provided.
Cost: $12, sign-up deadline: November 15th
Rock Climbing: For these two introductory rock climbing trips we will travel to the Blue Ridge Mountains near Waynesboro, Virginia to challenge ourselves with some excellent top rope climbing at Ravens Roost and Goshen Pass. The climbs are tall and just right for those getting started or can be modified to challenge even the most hardcore rock jock. All Equipment, guides, transportation, and Climbing Shoes are included, you bring lunch.
Cost: $20, sign-up deadlines: September 20thand October 25th
Canoe Overnight: Paddle up to primitive camping along the shores of James River State Park. No previous paddling experience is required, as our guides will show you a few strokes to get you moving down river in style. Learn to navigate a canoe in moving water, cook dinner together and camp out in tents under the stars. All canoeing and camping equipment, trip meals and camping fees are included.
