Getting Started

Below are some important items to consider BEFORE the actual conversion to RedDot takes place. This is a good opportunity to take a close look at the content of your website and make any necessary changes as needed.

Map the current website.

Map out your current site. Simple bullet lists can be used or an organizational chart. Determine the top level pages of the site, then the next level of pages linked from the top level, and so on. This will show the current structure of the site. Consider whether you want to keep this structure or whether it needs to be rearranged. Are there new sections you would like added to the site? Do some of the sub level pages need to be moved to different sections of the website? Are some pages not needed? As you do this, think from your visitor's point of view and not from the organizational side.

Who is going to update your website?

Identify who in your department is going to be responsible for the upkeep of your website once it is moved to RedDot. How much time will they have available? During the transition they will need more time available to assist with the move and be trained in using RedDot. Once the site is moved they will need to have some regular time assigned to maintaining the content of the website. With RedDot, you can have multiple content managers, so we recommend having at least two people with access to maintain the site to help distribute the responsibility and in case one is unavailable.

What do you want to achieve with your website?

Look at your current website and consider whether it is providing what your visitors need. Think about whether the content on the website is relevant. If you feel the goals of your website are not being met, consider what needs to be changed to meet these goals.

Is the information on your website out of date?

Note whether any of the current content is out of date. Work on updating that information so that all content is fresh and up-to-date when we are ready to move your site to RedDot.

Is any of the content irrelevant or redundant?

When looking at the content of your current website, note any content you feel is no longer relevant or valid. Check also for information that is needlessly duplicated across the website. You will want remove/clean this content up before the conversion.

Is there new content you wish to add?

If there is new content that needs to be added to the website, start gathering that information together and consider where you want it to appear in the new structure of your website.
