About the Institute

The Longwood Institute of Archaeology engages in world class archaeological projects in the research and cultural resource management environments for a wide-range of public and private clients. By engaging undergraduate students in its research projects, the Institute of Archaeology provides undergraduates with practical, real-world experience to build upon and apply methods, theories and skills learned in the classroom, thereby giving students a practical advantage over their peers from other institutions.

The Institute of Archaeology is operated by a skilled team of professional archaeologists with extensive experience in archaeological research and the cultural resource management industry, under the leadership of Dr. Brian Bates, Executive Director and Senior Principal Investigator. Undergraduate students are engaged on projects to work with these professional archaeologists to learn important skills while earning a real wage for their efforts.

This exciting initiative offers unprecedented educational opportunities for our students. We will never lose our focus on students and making their educational experience at Longwood the best that it can possibly be, thus shaping their futures in positive ways.
