Mission and Goals of Southside AHEC

        The mission of the Southside Area Health Education Center, Inc. is to improve the health of Southside Virginians through health careers promotion, practice support, and health education.

        The goals of the Southside Area Health Education Center, Inc. include:

 
1.    Provide  all secondary students exposure to health careers and to the opportunities
   available in health careers.
 2.    Enhance and expand relationships with health training institutions.
 3.    Identify means of support to the community-based training programs of primary  
   care and allied health professional students and residents in Southside Virginia's 
   underserved areas.
4.    Provide practice support to healthcare professionals, matching graduates to
   practice sites, and disseminating information through modern technology.
5.   Create partnerships with community businesses, healthcare, education, and human
  service organizations to achieve the shared goal of  improved health and disease
  prevention for the citizens of Southside Virginia.
 6.   Promote a broad based concept of wellness for Southside Virginians.

Service Area

       These activities take place within the geographic boundaries of the counties of Amelia, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Greensville, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Prince Edward, Prince George, Surry, Sussex, and the cities of Emporia, Hopewell, and Petersburg.  Emphasis is placed upon conducting activities in areas defined as medically underserved areas (MUAs) and/or health professional shortage areas (HPSAs).
