Dept. of Education, Special Education and Social Work - Science Teacher Preparation : Admissions

Admission to the University

Students intending to complete the Secondary Science Teacher Preparation Program will be admitted to the University and declare themselves as a major in biology, chemistry, or physics. Students should also officially elect the Secondary Science Concentration with the Registration Office.

Admission to Teacher Preparation

Students are expected to complete a written application for Admission to Teacher Preparation during the fall semester of their sophomore year. Transfer students should complete the application for Admission to Teacher Preparation during their first semester at Longwood.

Requirements for Admission to Teacher Preparation include the following.

  • Completed application
  • Successful completion of Praxis I
  • Overall GPA of 2.50
  • Minimum grade of "C" in ENGL 150
  • Minimum grade of "C" in EDUC 245 and EDUC 260
  • Student Evaluation Checklist completed by course instructors in EDUC 245 and EDUC 260
  • Successful completion of Practicum I (EDUC 265)

In addition, Science majors with Secondary Science Concentration are required to submit their Science Teaching Portfolio to the Science Education advisor. See advisor for details.

Admission to Student Teaching

Students are expected to complete a written application for Admission to Student Teaching two semesters before the Student Teaching semester.

Requirements for Admission to Student Teaching include the following.

  • Prior admission to Teacher Preparation
  • Completed application
  • Overall GPA of 2.50
  • Major GPA of 2.50
  • Minimum grade of "C" in ENGL 400
  • Minimum grade of "C" and overall GPA of 2.75 in EDUC/SCED/SPED courses
  • Successful completion of Practicum II (EDUC 370)
  • Faculty recommendations

In addition, Science majors with Secondary Science Concentration are required to submit their Science Teaching Portfolio to the Science Education advisor. See advisor for details.

Admission to Student Teaching

Recommendation for Licensure

Requirements for Recommendation for Licensure include the following.

  • Completed application
  • Minimum grade of “C” in Student Teaching
  • Teacher Work Sample
  • Successful completion of Praxis II
  • Minimum grade of "C" and overall GPA of 2.75 in EDUC/SCED/SPED courses
  • Senior Survey and program evaluations
