The Teacher Work Sample

Teacher Work Sample (TWS) methodology has been adopted by Longwood University to be a cornerstone of all teacher preparation programs. Longwood is one of eleven colleges and universities (Renaissance Partnership) developing TWS. TWS methodology emphasizes K-12 student learning that takes place when university teacher candidates go to schools for field experiences. The university student plans and teaches a short unit in a school classroom, and measures and analyzes student learning that is achieved. The TWS project consists of seven specific components – Contextual Factors, Learning Goals, Assessment Plan, Design for Instruction, Instructional Decision-Making, Analysis of Student Learning, and Reflection and Self-Evaluation. Liberal Studies students learn and apply TWS methodology during their Partnership Semester, and they apply TWS again during Student Teaching. Secondary students learn TWS methodology in designated methods courses as listed below, and they apply TWS during Student Teaching.
