General Scholarships and Awards

  • Corbin-Bigby Scholarship – Awarded to a full-time freshman with a 3.0 or above pursuing a degree leading to a teaching position in elementary education.
  • Hull Scholars Excellence in Education Scholarship – Awarded on the basis of high school academic performance and pursuit of a degree leading to teacher licensure in Elementary Education, Secondary Education, or Special Education. Recipients selected must have a minimum of 3.5 cumulative grade point average and 1200 SAT score. Ten full-tuition, in-state rate, scholarships are awarded annually, renewable for three years provided a cumulative 3.5 grade point average is maintained.
  • Helen B. Simpson Scholarship – Awarded to full-time incoming freshman pursuing degree in teacher education. Preference to students from Loudon County or Harrisonburg, VA.
    Financial Aid Scholarships
  • Marjorie Matthews Grizzard Scholarship – Awarded to an entering freshman with a 3.0 GPA, who intends to enter teaching profession and be in a program of studies that leads to teacher certification. Must have financial need. Must maintain 3.0 GPA for renewal.

Requirements: Scholarships mentioned in this brochure are awarded through the Longwood University Foundation and require a commitment that the student plan to teach. Awards are credited to the student’s University account.

How to Apply for the Scholarships: Applications for Teacher Preparation Scholarships will be available in Hull 259 starting on December 10, 2003 and completed application will be submitted to: Kim Wingo (Hull 259) no later than 4:00 PM on February 24, 2004.

EXAMPLES:

Isabelle Ball Baker Memorial Scholarship (Renewable) - Presented to students declaring an intention to enter the teaching profession who are deemed Longwood teacher education honors students based on academic excellence and need.  Preference is given to applicants from the Northern Neck region of Virginia including the counties of Northumberland, Lancaster, Westmoreland, Essex and Richmond.

Sue Yeaman Britton Scholarship (Renewable) - Presented to student who is a Virginia resident, enrolled in the Educational discipline and who achieves academically.

Alice E. Carter Scholarship (Renewable)  - Awarded to a graduate or undergraduate student based on financial need, academic achievement and promise as a teacher, giving special attention to recipient who has expressed a desire to teach grades K-7.

Class of 1934 Scholarship (Renewable) - Awarded to a junior or senior Virginia resident with a 3.0 or above GPA, based on academic achievement and financial need.

Marion Shelton Combs Scholarship (Renewable)  - Based on academic achievement with first preference to students from Virginia Counties in the Southwest and Southside.

Lelia Holloway Davis Scholarship (Renewable) - Awarded to a full-time Southside Virginia resident who plans to teach elementary education; 3.0 GPA or higher.

William F. and Martha J. Dorrill Scholarship (Renewable) - Awarded to a full-time undergraduate or graduate student with a 3.0 GPA or above majoring in a field of study leading to certification in Special Education; based on academic achievement and financial need.

Lulie Evelyn Duke Scholarship (Renewable) - Awarded to a student preparing to become an elementary school teacher with preference to students from the Chesapeake-Portsmouth area.

Betty Jane Shackelford Ellison Memorial Scholarship (Renewable) - Presented to a full-time undergraduate student seeking license as an elementary school teacher; Virginia resident and 3.0 GPA required.

J. B. Fuqua/Kappa Delta Pi Scholarship - Awarded to an active member of Kappa Delta Pi who is classified as a senior the year in which the award to be used and has a 3.25 GPA.

Lillie Evelyn Goodrich Fund (Renewable) - Awarded to a full-time undergraduate student, rising sophomore, proven academic performance; consideration may be given to financial need.

Nell H. Griffin Scholarship - Presented to a rising junior or senior enrolled in Early Childhood Education with a 3.0 GPA, who has shown professional potential.

Helen McGuire Hahn Scholarship (Renewable) - Preference to full-time enrolled undergraduate student; second preference to full-time graduate student; 3.0 or above GPA. Virginia resident; prefer students, residents of counties in Southwest Virginia: Buchanan, Dickenson, Grayson, Lee, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington and Wise.

S. Virginia and Berta M. Newell Scholarship;Two Awards (Renewable) - Awarded to a junior or senior with GPA of 2.75.  Preference is given to a student from Southside Virginia.

Dr. Kathleen Ranson Scholarship (Renewable) - Presented to student based on academic achievement, need, and intention to enter the teaching profession.

Virginia Price Waller Education Scholarship (Renewable) - Presented to student who has completed 15 s.h., a 2.5 GPA, or above, with financial need as the final determining factor for selection. Preference is given to a Longwood Student Education Association member.

Louise Brightwell Watson Memorial Scholarship (Renewable) - First preference is given to applicants from Prince Edward, Buckingham, Cumberland, Nottoway, and/or Charlotte Counties. Based on financial need, academic merit and intention to enter the teaching profession.

Helen Cody Wright Scholarship (Renewable) - Awarded to a student who expresses a desire to teach, maintains acceptable academic standing with a preference to a resident of Amelia County.

Margie Lee Culley Wygal Scholarship - Based on merit, awarded to a junior or senior pursuing a career in teaching.


Special Application for Rust and Centennial Scholarships

How to Apply: These two scholarships require that you be nominated by a department chair in consultation with faculty. A letter of recommendation from the department chair and your form are then considered by a special committee. Both scholarships are awarded to rising seniors who have completed 75 s.h. and have minimum 3.25 GPA.
