Re: Annual Report of Honors Program Advisory Committee
April 16, 2007
Summary of Action by the Honors Advisory Committee,
2006-07
Members of the committee this year were Geoff Orth, honors
director; Ray Brastow, COBE; Dave Locascio, COEHS; and Lee Bidwell and Lara
Smith, CAS; student members were Jessica Laffoon and Jay Crowell.
The committee met regularly throughout the year.
The major actions of the committee were as follows:
- Planned open houses for prospective honors applicants,
including a major all-day event in February, at which students were given an
overview of the program and an opportunity to tour ARC and attend an honors
class
- Completed work on a formalized and uniform process for
the awarding of major scholarships, which included on-campus interviews for
both Hull and Cormier Scholarships. Seven Hull Scholarships were offered,
and the seven entering students receiving offers all accepted, while three
Cormier Scholarships were offered, and all three will be accepted by the
middle of April. Three Longwood Scholars were also named for the entering
freshman class.
- Reviewed files for the Advanced Honors Scholarship,
selecting rising juniors Jay Crowell, a major in French, and Rachel Price, a
major in communications.
- Discussed the feasibility of establishing an honors
college at Longwood, and with the encouragement of the Provost and the
President, we will work toward completion of a draft plan in 2007-08.
- Reviewed the growth of the program, which will support
the need for a larger honors living-learning community in Wheeler Hall
beginning in the summer of 2007
