Course Description
Development of increased proficiency in all linguistic skills and a more extensive acquaintance with French and Francophone culture. This course will prepare students for more advanced culture and literature courses, but will also prepare students to use French to communicate effectively and to function in a foreign community.

Course Objectives
Students will demonstrate the ability to:
1. Read aloud with proper pronunciation and intonation passages from literary works.
2. Read, understand, and discuss literary works from the point of view of plot, setting, and character.
3. Review and master relatively advanced elements of French grammar and learn additional vocabulary.
4. Develop in speaking and in writing dialogues, descriptions, analyses, and arguments that build on and refer to materials read.

Grading follows a 10-point scale (such that, for example, 80-82=B-, 83-87=B, 88-89=B+).
Participation and Attendance:
Since participation in class, besides being an important means of improving students’ ability to understand and speak French, is also a part of the final grade, class attendance is obligatory. The attendance policy is the one stated in the catalogue, to wit:
Students
are expected to attend all classes. Failure to attend class regularly impairs
academic performance. Absences are disruptive to the educational process for
others. This is especially true when absences cause interruptions for
clarification of material previously covered, failure to assume assigned
responsibilities for class presentations, or failure to adjust to changes in
assigned material or due dates.
It
is the responsibility of each instructor to give students a copy of his or her
attendance policy in the course syllabus.
Instructors
may assign a grade of “0” or “F” on work missed because of unexcused absences.
Instructors have the right to lower a student’s course grade, but no more than
one letter grade, if the student misses 10 percent of the scheduled class
meeting times for unexcused absences.
Instructors
have the right to assign a course grade of “F” when the student has missed a
total (excused and unexcused) of 25 percent of the scheduled class meeting
times.
Students must assume full responsibility for any loss incurred because of absence, whether excused or unexcused. Instructors should permit students to make up work when the absence is excused. Excused absences are those resulting from the student’s participation in a college-sponsored activity, from recognizable emergencies, or from serious illness. Faculty may require documentation for excused absences in their attendance policy. Student Health Services can provide documentation only for students hospitalized locally or absent at the direction of Student Health Services personnel.

Reading responses and grammar exercises
Each day the instructor will collect your “reading response” to the passage read and the grammar exercises that were assigned. The “reading response” will answer the “Reading Comprehension” questions in the textbook but should be written in the form of coherent paragraphs that will provide a running summary of the material read.
Récitations et explications de texte
Each day different students will read aloud and then analyze a passage from the text. Pronunciation and intonation in reading should indicate both comprehension and prior preparation.
Leçons de grammaire
Each day one or more students will take responsibility for presenting a point of grammar and leading students in reviewing the associated exercise. The presenter is encouraged to require participation from the other students.
Honor Code
Students are expected to live by the Longwood College Honor Code. All work done for the class must be pledged.
