Course description: A course designed to allow students
to review and perfect their knowledge of French grammar with a stress on the
proper use of certain grammatical and syntactic constructions and idiomatic
expressions. Student compositions will include translations into French
as well as original essays involving character description, narration,
polemical writing, summarization, and literary analysis.

Course objectives:
Students will demonstrate an ability to:
1. Use properly the basic elements of French grammar.
2. Recognize and deal with certain peculiarly French grammatical and syntactic constructions and idiomatic expressions.
3. Express

Final exam
Grading: The final grade will be based on the five quizzes (20%), a mid-term
exam (15%), compositions (40%), presence and participation (10%), and a final
comprehensive exam (15%).
Attendance Policy: Students are expected to attend
all classes. The attendance policy for this course is the same as the
college policy in the college catalog and the student handbook. Note that
this policy allows an instructor to "assign a grade of F when the student
has missed a total (excused and unexcused) of 25% of the scheduled class
meeting times.
Honor Code: Students are expected to live by the
Longwood College Honor Code. All work done for the class must be pledged.
Quizzes and exams: Quizzes and exams will be based on work done in class and for
homework. They will comprise exercises designed to test your grasp of
grammatical points as well as essays and short translations. They must be
taken at the scheduled time except in the case of an excused absence from class
(illness, participation in a college-sponsored activity, or recognizable
emergency.)
