Useful Classroom Expressions

It is vital to speak French as much as possible in the classroom.  15% of the course grade is reserved for participation, preparation, and willingness to speak French.  At this level of instruction, real effort on the student’s part counts for a lot.  Below is a list of expressions you may use in class to get your point across.

When addressing you professor, you should always use « vous » and the polite forms of address. 

When you have a question, say « Excusez-moi », rather than « J’ai une question ». 

To call to your professor, you can simply say, « Monsieur ? ».

When you don’t understand

            Je ne comprends pas.
           
            Excusez-moi, pourquoi est-ce que . . .
           
            Comment ?

            Pourriez-vous répéter cela ?

            Encore une fois, s’il vous plaît.

            Quelle page, s’il vous plaît ?

To have something spelled

            Est-ce que vous pouvez écrire cette expression au tableau ?

            Ça s'écrit comment?

When you don`t know a word

            Comment dit-on « XYZ  » en français ?

            Que veut-dire « XYZ  » ?

 When someone sneezes

            À tes souhaits.
