Francisco Javier Fernández Urenda, PhD

Welcome to my web page.

A native of Spain, I have been living in the United States for almost thirteen years. I am currently serving as Associate Professor of Spanish at the Department of English and Modern Languages at Longwood University, in the heart of Virginia, but I have also taught at the University of Texas at El Paso and Universidad de La Rioja in Spain.

My research interests are in modern and contemporary Spanish literature: the idea of "nation" in 19th century Spanish literature, power and intellectuals, gender issues and perception in 19th and early 20th century Spanish literature, radical literature before the Spanish Civil War, etc. Among the authors I have published about are Manuel Bretón de los Herreros, Ventura de la Vega, Mariano José de Larra, Wenceslao Ayguals de Izco, José Zorrilla, Federico Urales, Eduardo Barriobero y Herrán, and Eugenio Noel.

I enjoy riding motorcycles, travelling, and spending time with my family.
