Over Spring break I had the opportunity to participate on a
mission trip to Tegucigalpa, Honduras. We traveled through
an organization called Book of Hope, which is an
outreach ministry to children all over the world. Every day
we would visit schools, perform dramas for the students, and
hand out a book (Libro de Vida) to every child. One
day we went to a site where they were re-building a church
that had been destroyed in a hurricane in 1998. For about 3
hours our team helped these people cut wire, mix and haul
cement, or whatever they needed us to do in order to help.
Honduras was an amazing place, with gorgeous mountains and
wonderful people. Not only did I enjoy the mission part of
the trip, but I also enjoyed getting the chance to speak
Spanish and engage in the Spanish culture. Not only did this
trip remind me of why I am a Spanish major, but it also made
me realize how much traveling and immerging yourself in the
Spanish culture can help to learn the language, as well as
the way of life. Honduras was definitely an eye-opening
experience, and I look forward to returning this summer!
