La España del Cid
May 31-June 16, 2007
Study at the beaches defended by El Cid against the Moors, while becoming proficient in Spanish and immersing yourself in a culture rich in history, art and romance.

Courses offered: Choose one: Spanish 201, 202 or 302 (3 credits)
This program satisfies Longwood University's Goal 9 (as an "approved international experience"), in addition to ONE of the following: Goal 10, Goal 12 (302), BA Humanities requirement, or Spanish major/minor elective.
Course Descriptions
Topics in these courses will focus on the history, art, literature and culture surrounding the historical figure of El Cid, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar.
SPANISH 201.Intermediate I. A course designed to help students develop skills in speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and writing in Spanish, and apply these skills in a context that recognizes and explores the particularities of Spanish and Latin American cultures. Prerequisite: SPAN 102 or an appropriate placement test score. Followed by SPAN 202. 3 credits. (Satisfies General Education Goal 9 and 10)
SPANISH 202. Intermediate II. Students will continue to develop the skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing at a higher level, integrating a wide variety of topics and materials from the target culture. Prerequisite: SPAN 201 or appropriate placement test score. Successful completion of this course satisfies the foreign language requirement for the B.A. degree and is prerequisite for upper-level courses. 3 credits. (Satisfies General Education Goal 9 and 10)
SPANISH 302. Practice in oral communication skills, including expansion of vocabulary and improvement of pronunciation and listening comprehension. A functional approach, emphasizing strategies for circumlocution, initiating and closing conversation, requesting and providing information, narrating, expressing wishes, complaints, and emotions, giving and receiving advice, and supporting opinions. Prerequisite: SPAN 202 or equivalent. 3 credits. Speaking intensive course. Satisfies General Education Goal 9, in addition to one of the following: Goal 10, 12, BA Humanities requirement OR Spanish major or minor elective.

Typical daily schedule during the program:
8:00 am breakfast
9:00 – 11:15 classes
11:30-2:00 accompanied class activities in Valencia
2:00 pm lunch with host family
2:30-5:00 siesta; free time; exercise time
5:00-7:30 accompanied class activities in Valencia
7:30-9:00 discussions; journals; tapas
9:00 pm dinner with host family

Application and $400 deposit due before November 28, 2006
