Student A

Situación 1

Student B

You are from Spain, studying for the year at Longwood.  Your roomate or best friend (from Virginia) is traumatized because a black cat has just crossed his/her path.  Ask him/her about his/her fears and reasons for them.  Ask him/her about any past events that may have triggered these beliefs or fears.  Explain about Spain's superstitions.  Persuade and influence him/her to ignore his/her fears and go about today as a normal day.

Student A

You are a candidate for public office.  You must outline your political platform and influence the voters (Student B) so that they will vote for you.  Be convincing; they may disagree with you.  Explain the platform, naming bilingual education and the environment as your main issues of importance.  Explain past events that helped shape your position.  Ask voters what disagreements they have and try to answer those.  Defend your stance, be persuasive, be emotional.

Situación 2

Student B

You are trying to decide which candidate to vote for, and are having a conversation with a candidate who is explaining his/her platform (Student A).  Ask about the issues; get details.  Ask about past events that shaped the candidate's stance on the issues.  Oppose these stances, and argue with the candidate, expressing doubt, disbelief, denial.  Try to convince him/her that quite the opposite of what he/she proposes is the best course of action and try to influence him/her.  Use past experiences to help explain your own stance.  Be specific, be persuasive, be emotional.

Student A

You are a strong proponent of protecting the environment, and you are trying to convince your friend to become more conscious of the effects of his/her lifestyle on the environment.  You walk everywhere, use no perfumed products, have 5 recycling bins in your room, attend protest marches at the local tobacco factory. Your friend is entirely oblivious to the importance of preserving the environment, and commits all kinds of atrocities.  Explain the kinds of things you do and have always done, and try to convince him/her that he/she can be more helpful.  Explain past ocurrences that have been destructive and that influence your actions.  Suggest, insist, advise, be emotional.

You are the President of the U.S.  Cuba has just become a democracy, and the new President (Student B) has called you to get advice about several issues.  Advise him/her about the importance of the economy, bilingual education, the environment, and maintaining the cultural heritage of Cuba.  Try to influence him/her on those issues, even though the Cuban President may disagree with you.  Explain past events, possibly from both countries, that support your stance.  Express emotion; express doubt about some of his/her ideas, and be persuasive.

Estudiante B

You are the newly elected President of Cuba.  You've decided to do away with comunism and to install a democratic government, so you have called the President of the U.S. (Student A) for advice.  Ask for advice, but don't allow the U.S. to condescend to you, defend your country, let him/her know that you are the one in power; express emotion.  Express doubt about some of the President's ideas and give suggestions to the President of the U.S. for helping Cuba become democratic, and insist on certain conditions.  Explain past events, possibly from both countries, that support your stance.

Strike!  You are a Longwood student upset over Longwood's recycling program, which is a lie--nothing is recycled and items from the recycling bins are dumped in together with the other trash.   You are discussing this issue with a professor and trying to convince him/her to get the faculty to strike along with the students.  Talk about the problems, what Longwood did in the past, how you know this,  and what you hope to gain by striking.  Express emotion; try to influence; defend your position against possible criticism and influence.  Be specific; there are events which have happened and others which will happen.
