Course Description: German 342 is a survey of German literature of the 19th and 20th centuries. Readings in the course will include drama, prose fiction, and essays. All texts will be in German and students are expected to conduct discussions of these works in the target language. This course is writing intensive.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

 

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to…

 

  1. Demonstrate the ability to read, understand and analyze literary texts as seen in class discussions, oral presentations, and assigned papers.  General Education Outcomes 1 and 2, Criteria 1, 2, 8.

 

  1. Demonstrate the ability to use literary terms in textual criticism.  General Education Outcome 3, Criteria 1, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9.

 

  1. Demonstrate the ability to identify selected major German authors, literary forms, and important literary movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.  General Education Outcomes 1 and 2, Criteria 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9.

 

GRADING SCALE AND COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

 

Grading Scale:  A= 90-100; B= 80-89; C= 70-79; D= 60-69; F= below 60

 

  1. Class discussions, presentations, written homework, and short quizzes:  30%

 

  1. Mid-term test: 10%

 

  1. Three word-processed essays:  40%

 

  1. Final examination: 20%

 

ATTENDANCE AND WITHDRAWAL POLICIES:

 

Class attendance is required, and students are expected to be present on a daily basis. Students are responsible for any work covered during their absence. The college catalog outlines the attendance policy: absence from more than 25% of the scheduled class meetings (for any reason, excused or unexcused) may result in a failing grade for the course. Tests and written assignments must be completed on the scheduled date unless prior permission is granted by the instructor. Unexcused absence from a test will result in the grade of zero. The withdrawal policy is outlined in the University catalog.
